Elmer Frazer präsentiert Besuchern aus der Türkei sein Dampfschiff, die 'Golden Nugget'. Die Gäste sind begeistert von seinem Wissen und laden ihn ein, sie in der Türkei zu besuchen. James wittert sofort ein Geschäft und bietet an, Elmer dort hinzubringen. Auch Isabel und William sollen Elmer begleiten, doch Isabel lehnt das energisch ab. So steht sie mit ihrem Sohn winkend am Kai und James, Anne und Elmer gehen auf die lange Reise.
Fraser is entertaining a prospective backer for his steamship, a representative from Turkey, who invites him to his country to see an engine they have built there. Albert is anxious to go, but James is annoyed, left behind and with the project seemingly back a step. Albert tells him though that this will push the project forward, not back, and seeing his chance James offers to go with Albert. Anne goes too, but Elizabeth stays behind with William, again waving farewell to her husband, a position she swore from the start she would never find herself in. Emma Callon is suspicious as to why Fraser and Onedin are going to Turkey, and directs her fiancé to find out. Cracks are appearing in the engagement of she and Daniel already, as he declares his desire for children and she wants more than just that out of marriage. She wants to hold back on setting the date, anxious no doubt to enjoy what she can of her freedom before she has to settle down. Daniel goes to visit Elizabeth, yet again,

Albert nagy örömmel fogadja a meghívást, mert ettől függ a cége és a maga által tervezett gőzhajó jövője. James vállalja, hogy elviszi a hajóján, miközben szenet szállít Port Saidba. Szulejmán pasa nagy szeretettel fogadja Frazert, James Onedint és Anne-t. James Onedin egyik volt matróza azt javasolja, ne dohányt vásároljon, hanem habkövet, amit most nagyon jó áron lehet venni Santorin szigetén. James elfogadja az ajánlatot. Úgy véli azonban, hogy arról a tájról csupán gőzhajóval lehet elszállítani az árut, s ezért vitorlásába mégis dohányt rakodik. Majd a matróz segítségével bérel egy gőzhajót és elhajózik Santorinba.
