The Living and the Dead“ spielt im Jahr 1888 in der englischen Grafschaft Somerset. Im Mittelpunkt steht Nathan Appleby (Colin Morgan), der gerade eine kleinen Farm geerbt hat und mit seiner Ehefrau Charlotte (Charlotte Spencer) nun einen neuen Lebensabschnitt beginnen will.
Doch seit der Ankunft der beiden scheinen fremdartige, aufrüttelnde und geradezu übernatürliche Phänomene aufzutreten. Nathan geht ihnen nach und ist besessen davon, die Existenz von Geistern und übernatürlichen Wesen zu beweisen.
