Nick lässt trotzdem nicht locker und bittet Joeys Vater, den Zahnarzt Harold Watson, den Jungen bei sich aufzunehmen - doch ohne Erfolg. Um Joey trotzdem beschützen zu können, bleibt Nick nun nichts anderes übrig, als ihn in einem Heim unterzubringen.
Shannons Vater Roy will nach Florida umziehen und bittet Burton, sich um Shannon zu kümmern. Nachdem Shannon ihn damals aber fälschlicherweise beschuldigt hatte, sie misshandelt zu haben, weiß Burton nicht, ob er sich noch einmal auf sie einlassen soll. Schließlich siegen jedoch Burtons väterliche Gefühle für Shannon, und er nimmt sie wieder bei sich auf.
The first episode begins with scenes from the season finale, leading up to Burton and Nick heading for the concert that was to start at 7:30 PM. Burton is mad because his parking spot was taken, he beats up the man that took it. Nick heads back to the office to find James Mooney dead.
Burton tries to set things right with Shannon after telling police Burton hurt her. Nick meets Joey who was abused at a carnival. Nick meets Harold Watson hoping Joey will live with him. Lulu tries to get her relationship with Nick on track before she leaves to start her job.
Nick gets angry at his dad for finding out if Ralph Trillo (the man Burton beat up) is okay. Nick worries about not having his job if Ralph talks to police.
Nick wants Joey to stay in a shelter because his mom won't protect him.
Nick Fallin rentre au bureau et trouve le corps de James Mooney, inanimé. De son côté, Burton Fallin essaie d'améliorer progressivement ses relations avec la jeune Shannon. Un nouveau dossier est confié à Nick : il s'agit de défendre les intérêts de Joey, qui a été pernicieusement agressé lors de la fête de carnaval. C'est alors que le conciliateur tente de trouver une solution pour la jeune victime. Pendant ce temps, Lulu a terminé ses préparatifs de départ. Son nouvel emploi l'attend. Elle tente de parler une dernière fois à Nick, qui ne parvient pas à accepter son départ...
Nick e Burton stanno andando ad un concerto quando litigano violentemente con Ralph Trillo, un tizio che aveva rubato loro il posto auto nel parcheggio. L'uomo spinge violentemente Burton e Nick interviene. Ne nasce un tafferuglio, durante il quale padre e figlio picchiano violentemente il malcapitato. Lungo la strada del ritorno, nei pressi dell'ufficio di Alvin, Nick vede Taliek che sta fuggendo. Temendo il peggio, Fallin si reca ai Servizi Legali e trova il cadavere di James. Burton si informa sulle condizioni di salute di Ralph Trillo. Nick rischia una nuova denuncia e la revoca della condizionale. Burton riesce a sistemare la faccenda pagando una grossa somma a Ralph, in cambio del suo silenzio. Nick si occupa di Joey Smith, un bambino che ha subito delle molestie da parte del proprietario del circo nel quale vive. La madre del bambino, al corrente di tutto, sembra aver taciuto la faccenda per evitare la chiusura dello spettacolo viaggiante. Il piccolo viene così allontanato dalla donna, che continuerà ad esibirsi come donna serpente. Roy decide di lasciare Pittsburgh per la Florida e Shannon torna così a vivere con Burton.
