In der Wüste Arizonas entkommt Richard Kimble knapp der Polizei, wird jedoch angeschossen. Zur Hilfe kommen ihm Indianer, die ihn in ihre Indianerschule mitnehmen. Wieder bei Kräften, arbeitet er in der Schule mit. Sowohl Lehrerin Annie Johnson als auch die Schüler lieben ihn. Als Hilfssheriff Steel von dem neuen Lehrer erfährt, wird er misstrauisch. Injuring after being shot during a police chase, Kimble seeks refuge at an orphange near a Navajo Indian reservation in Puma County, Arizona. Annie Johnson, the head teacher (and herself an orphan), removes the bullet and offers Kimble work as a teacher. Meanwhile, while the local sheriff Prycer belives that Kimble has escaped, a determined and overzealous deputy, named Steel, belives Kimble is still in the area and suspects Annie of sheltering the fugitive.

Le procès de Richard Kimble se poursuit. Le médecin fugitif voit approcher la fin de son calvaire car le mystère de la mort de sa femme est sur le point d'être enfin dévoilé. C'est l'occasion pour tous les acteurs du drame de se retrouver lors d'une ultime et fort constructive confrontation...
