Doch als er entdeckt, daß kein Ort schöner ist als zuhause, kehrt er zu seinen Eltern zurück und reist mit seinem Vater zu einem abgelegenen Kloster in Griechenland, das auf der Spitze eines hohen Berges liegt. Die anstrengende Reise und der lange Auf- und Abstieg in einem winzigen Aufzug an einer gewaltigen Felswand bringen Vater und Sohn einander näher.
The world-wide trip that Henry Jones, Jr. embarks upon in the early 1900s next takes him and his family to Russia. A fit of clumsiness lands Junior into hot water with his father. Not bearing any more punishment, Indy runs away into the Russian countryside. He encounters an odd, cantankerous old man named Leo Tolstoy, who is in full agreement that hell is other people. Both are running away to seek a simpler life. They cross the countryside, encountering colorful Gypsies and avoiding fierce Imperial Cossack troops. The hardships of the journey make Indy homesick, but he won't soon forget his journey with the stubborn old man.
Indy's next destination is Greece, where his mother Anna realizes that father and son need to spend more time together. The two bristle at each other's company as they explore the sites of ancient Greece, but Henry finally reaches past Indy's impudence and stubbornness when the topic turns to philosophy and the teachings of Aristotle. A series of misadventures lead them to an isolated monastery perched high on the peak of a mountain. While studying in the library, Indy meets Nikos Kazantzakis, the writer who would some day write Zorba the Greek. Lessons on causality come in handy on the harrowing trip in a tiny cage reeled up a thousand-foot mountainside.

Dans la seconde partie, c'est en Grèce, dans un monastère isolé, perché en haut d'une montage qu'il rencontre Nikos Kazantzakis, futur écrivain de "Zorba le Grec".
V Rusku se Indy ztratí svým rodičům, cestuje společně se spisovatelem Tolstojem a objeví kouzlo vesnického života. Poté cestuje se svým otcem do Řecka, kde se konečně mezi nimi vytváří větší vzájemné pouto.

Indy Oroszországban alaposan megismeri a társadalmi különbségeket, szemtanúja lesz az arisztokrácia nagyvonalú és költekező életének, és látja, milyen szegénységben élnek a parasztok. Amikor összekülönbözik szüleivel, megszökik, s kalandos útja során jó barátságot köt Tolsztojjal. Indy azonban hamar ráébred arra, hogy szökése meggondolatlanság volt, így visszatér családjához. Apjával újabb expedícióra indul: a görög hegyi kolostorokat látogatják meg.

När Indiana tröttnar på det hela och rymmer från sina föräldrar stöter han såsmåninom på en äldre man, som visar sig vara den berömde författaren Leo Tolstoy som också är på rymmen från sin familj. Äventyret fortsätter senare i Grekland där hans mamma tycker att han ska spendera mer tid med sin pappa, vilket tar dem på en resa genom den grekiska landsbygden.
