  • S01E01 Forging Asta's [Demon Dweller] Sword - Black Clover

    • December 30, 2019
    • YouTube

This is our first full build episode on this channel. Ilya, Matt and Chris forge, grind and fabricate the Demon Dweller Sword of Asta from Black Clover. This build has everything. Blacksmithing, Bladesmithing Power Hammer forging, Hand forging, duo striking, Punching and drifting, grinding and much much more! If you liked Black Clover or just are into blacksmithing and bladesmithing than this is the video for you! The heat treat alone on a big blade like this was a huge risk and to make it even more fun Ilya did a water quench. Asta's Demon Dweller is bright and shiny when someone with mana wields it but when Asta uses it, it is quite crude. We decided to forge all of the parts and leave them as close to "as is" after forging to mimic this look and I think you will agree that it looks awesome!

  • S01E02 Making The [Witcher] Sword

    • February 12, 2020
    • YouTube

The tale of making the Witcher Steel Sword from the Netflix show out of meteorite. From the forging of the blade to the creation of Renfri's broach, we show it all. A sword Geralt of Rivia would be proud to use. The tale is told by our very own bard, Chris Cash of Mt Phillip Metal Works. Working with meteorite is complex in it’s self. Making a sword of this quality adds several challenges. Not only working the material but heat treating the blade and grinding the complex plunges and creating the proper garnishments using classical silversmithing techniques. Gem setting, chasing and repousse are all used to bring this magical sword to life.

  • S01E04 Castlevania - Forging The Morning Star of Trever Belmont

    • April 13, 2020
    • YouTube

In this video Ilya, Chris and Matt forge the Morning Star from Castlevania. This chain whip or flail is used in the 80's video game and starts out as a standard whip that gets upgraded as you go and the end result is the morning star. In the Netflix anime Castlevania Trever Belmont finds the morning star behind a bookcase already in it's final form. That is the item that we chose to make. First by forging the flanges and then by grinding and polishing them and putting them together by mig welding and blending. This build has everything from blacksmithing to bladesmithing, fabrication and stock removal techniques. We even blow stuff up at the end! Vampires and monsters beware. We are ready to hunt! Even Alucard would be jealous of this morning star !

    • May 13, 2020
    • YouTube

In this episode we forge a Viking Spear using as close to historical materials and methods as possible. We make Steel from Iron using a sheer steel or blister steel method of carborizing. We forge the spear socket from wrought iron and do a multibar twisted core with a blister steel edge wrap. We also show some silver inlay techniques and do some fancy filework when its all done. Ilya goes above and beyond on this project and then we have some fun using the spear in the demo. There may even be an Assassin's Creed Valhalla sneak peek or two throughout the video. We highly enjoy making viking spears and it shows !

  • S01E07 Forging the Viking Axe from Assassin's Creed Valhalla

    • May 27, 2020
    • YouTube

We forge the cover axe from the new Assassin's Creed Valhalla game. During the video we share some fax about real viking axes as we forge this one based off of Boss Logic's Cover art that debuted the new game, revealed that it would take place in the Viking era and introduced us to Eivor. To create this axe we use a power hammer to do a lot of the forging but also show some hand techniques and we also use all of our forges. We start in the propane forge than move to coal and end up heat treating the axe and the back spike in the charcoal forge. We show some engraving into steel before the heat treat and some tricky grinding on our Brodbeck Ironworks belt sander. We are not sure at what point our hero Eivor Uses this axe in the game. In the trailer we see another viking using what seems to be this axe, but it has another spike out the top and it both spikes appear to be golden in color. I am guessing that was some sort of king or someone important to Eivor and he picks up the axe after the battle and uses it and maybe alters is at some point to his liking. Perhaps all of this speculation is for nothing and Boss Logic just removed the top spike for his art so that it didn't cover up Eivor's beard. Who knows?! Assassin's Creed games always have some sort of surprises and I am sure this one is bound to have loads of them. We are already hearing whispers that perhaps at some point in this game you have to choose to become an Assassin or a Templar. That would be one heck of a surprise! We will have to wait and see but for now lets make a Viking Axe with Matt and Ilya.

  • S01E08 Forging The [Lothric Knight Sword] - Dark Souls 3

    • June 23, 2020
    • YouTube

Forging the Lothric Knight Sword from Dark Souls 3. We did a series of live videos on instagram asking what video game piece we should make next. We talked it out and decided as a group to build the Lothric Knight Sword. This is a hand and half long sword that is said to be the best straight sword in Dark Souls 3. It is said to be a great thrusting and cutting sword and after we forge it we put all of those things to the test in the demo where we test how well it can thrust with both 1 hand and two hands as well as its cutting ability. We forged the blade from 1045 and 80crv with a sain mai construction to give the blade maximum flexibility and cutting performance. We forge welded wrought iron to make the guard for the Lothric Knight Sword and we forged the handle out of pipe on the little giant 50 lbs power hammer. In this video we show you our Evenheat kiln and how we use it to heat treat as well as showing our brodbeck ironworks grinders and how versatile they are. We show off our brand new Harris Torch at the end when we use a brass wire wheel to coat the steel fitting of the sword to give them an antiqued brass finish.

Big Power Hammer forging with punching and drifting. Loads of grinding work is done to the spear after forging. We use our Even Heat Kiln to show the proper way to heat treat an H 13 blade. We also use Lincoln Electric's Fc-90 to weld the parts of the spear all together.

  • S01E12 Making Tanjiro's Katana from [Demon Slayer]

    • November 13, 2020
    • YouTube

Making Tanjiro's Katana from Demon Slayer by Ilya Alekseyev using traditional Japanese methods to bring Tanjiro's Katana to life. This Video is shot more as a Katana making documentary then a normal episode from us. During the making of the Tanjiro's Katana Ilya give quite a few talks about how anime relates to the art of Japanese sword making and how it effected the western culture as far back as the Renaissance and continues to do so today. In Demon Slayer this Nichirin Blade has a blackened color to it after Tanjiro wields it. So, after a hand stone polish the katana was then darkened using acid and the hamon was then finger stoned back into place. The Katana was forged from Tamahagane and made as close to tradition as possible. In this video we show every last piece of the sword being made even the Saya and the pieces that go with it. If you want to see a Katana making video that shows every single step then this is the one for you!

  • S01E13 Nova's Weapon from Black Desert

    • December 22, 2020
    • YouTube

In this video we help bring the new character class Nova to life by forging her devastating weapon. Ilya challenged himself to forge as much to shape without having to use a grinder. Only the spikes were ground and the rest was forged on a power hammer or by hand. No welding was used either as all of the pieces were hot fit in the forging. This was a blast to make and showed how making swages and other tooling can be truly effective when having to make repetitive shapes. Black Desert's new class Nova is a fantastic design. Not only this weapon but her armor is top notch as well. You can fully customize your avatar in Black Desert so that you too can wield Nova's amazing weapons and armor.

    • February 6, 2021
    • YouTube

This Pole Arms were made popular by the Streltsy shooter brigade when they paired it with a match lock long gun. These pole arms were used from the 14th through the 17th century although some examples date back much further than that. In this video we do our best to recreate a bardiche that is as close to a historical example as possible. We use as close as possible materials and methods that would have been used by blacksmiths hundreds of years ago. Ilya and Matt both combine to bring one of the most heavily produced war axes in all of history.
