Plans to create marine nature reserves by banning fishing and other activities off the Welsh coast have sparked protest – with claims it could destroy coastal communities. Tonight’s T9 raises questions about the Welsh government’s controversial plans – and visits the first ever place in Britain to create such a zone to see if it’s possible to save marine wildlife without undermining communities.
As health boards in Wales announce far-reaching changes to the service, what effect will this have on patients and staffing levels? Despite protestations from communities, the financial squeeze means a big change is inevitable. Taro 9 travels to different parts of Wales and to the South of England to assess the effects of the biggest shake-up of the service since it was established in 1948.
Same sex marriages - David Cameron has said that he wants to see homosexual people having full marriage rights by 2015. But there are objectors – and the matter threatens to create an enormous rift within the Church. Taro 9 will announce the results of a special survey amongst the clergy in Wales. The programme also hears the opinion of The Very Reverend Jeffrey John, a Dean in the Church of England, who wants to see the legalisation of same sex marriages. The clergyman, who comes originally from Tonyrefail, will give his first television interview on the programme.
There’s a danger that plans to develop wind farms and pylons in Mid Wales will split communities in Montgomeryshire. According to several of those in favour of the plans, the behaviour and attitude of some protesters makes them afraid to show their support for wind energy. Taro Naw has spoken to people who are afraid of expressing their interest publicly, and there are fears for the long term impact of the split on some of the area’s communities.
