Hororové příběhy plné hrůzy, ale i černého humoru, dějových zvratů a překvapivých point. Hlavním spojovatelem všech příběhů je uvaděč, jakýsi Strážce krypty - kostlivec s lidským hlasem. Jednotlivé díly režírovalo mnoho známých tvůrců a v hlavních rolích se objevily filmové hvězdy své doby.

„Geschichten aus der Gruft“ („Tales from the Crypt“) ist eine Horror-Serie, die auf diversen Comics von William Gaines (auch bekannt als Bill Gaines), welche den bekannten „Gespenster-Geschichten“ in gewisser Weise ähneln, basiert. Eine Episode dauert ca. 25 Minuten und beinhaltet jeweils eine abgeschlossene Geschichte. Der Gruftie (Cryptkeeper) leitet jede Episode mit seinem unverwechselbaren Charme ein und bereitet den Zuschauer auf den bevorstehenden Horrortrip vor.

Based on the legendary and gruesome EC Comics from publisher William Gaines, this horror anthology featured stories of murder, the super natural, gore and humor and always had a twist ending of sorts. Some of Hollywood's biggest names took part, either working in front or behind the camera. Hosting duties fell to everyone's favorite decaying corpse, the Crypt Keeper. The success of this series spawned a Saturday morning cartoon series (Tales From the Cryptkeeper), a short lived Saturday morning gameshow on CBS (Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House) and lots of merchandise. Two feature films (Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood) were also produced. Two other movies based on the EC Comics (Tales From the Crypt and The Vault of Horror) were released back in 1972 and 1973 respectively. Ispirato al film del 1972 "Racconti dalla tomba", a sua volta basato sul leggendario fumetto della EC Comics edito da William Gaines, in Italia le prime due stagioni della serie vennero trasmesse con il titolo "Racconti di mezzanotte"; in Italia il telefilm conobbe una certa notorietà già nel 1989 quando i primi tre episodi vennero trasmessi in un film di 90 minuti per il cinema, dal titolo "Racconti dalla cripta".

Cada episódio conta uma história individual, apresentada pelo Guardião da Cripta. O guardião aparece no início e no final de cada episódio como uma espécie de alívio cômico, contando a essência da história e fazendo diversas tiradas sarcásticas relacionadas ao tema.

"Historias de la cripta" comenzó a emitirse en televisión en 1989 con la intención de revindicar el género de terror con el mismo romanticismo que lo hiciera "La dimensión desconocida" de Rod Serling en la década de los 50 y 60. Las historias eran adaptaciones de la colección de comics de terror que la editorial EC Comics había publicado en la década de los 50, en los que los personajes se veían enfrentados con destinos de lo más tétricos y donde cada historia era presentada por "El Guardián de la Cripta", gran anfitrión del horror que comentaba detalles escabrosos de cada cuento y que incluso se burlaba con ironía de los lectores. Esta forma de introducir el comic se conservó en la serie de televisión en la que cada episodio está precedido por un muñeco cadavérico, que resulta una excelente versión del que aparecía en las historias originales de papel.
