Detektiv Dave Starsky (BEN STILLER) je nejhorlivějším policistou v kalifornském Bay City. Když je ve službě, žádný zločin nezůstane nepotrestán - a on je ve službě pořád. Jde tak ve stopách své matky, která se stala jednou z nejlepších policistek v historii Bay City. Zatímco se ale jeho matka spokojila za celou svou kariéru s jedním parťákem, Starsky díky svému přehnanému nadšení střídá partnery jako na běžícím páse. Detektiv Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (OWEN WILSON) má tak trochu opačný problém - je dobrým policistou, ale jeho až nezvykle bezstarostná povaha a touha po rychlých penězích příliš neprospívá kvalitě jeho práce. Má vynikající instinkty, avšak potřebuje čas od času usměrnit, aby se udržel na méně výnosné straně zákona. Rozčilený policejní kapitán Dobey (FRED WILLIAMSON) ale našel způsob, kterým hodlá dva největší problémy na svém oddělení vyřešit najednou - udělat ze Starskyho a Hutche tým a vyslat je do ulic.

Die gegensätzlichen Polizisten Dave Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) und Ken Hutchinson (David Soul) arbeiten gemeinsam als verdeckte Ermittler. Der dunkelhaarige Starsky hat seine Manieren auf der Straße gelernt, der blonde Hutch ist gebildet und gesundheitsbewusst. Um in Verbrecherkreisen nicht aufzufallen, rasen sie mit einem extrem auffälligen, frisierten und verzierten Wagen durch die Gegend, prügeln sich und ballern mit ihren Pistolen herum. Für Informationen sehen sie über kleinere Delikte hinweg. Ihr Hauptinformant ist Huggy Bear (Antonio Fargas). Captain Harold Dobey (Bernie Hamilton) ist ihr Chef. Aaron Spelling und Leonard Goldberg produzierten die Serie, die in Deutschland anfangs wegen ihrer Brutalität heftige Kritik auslöste. In den USA wurde sie damals zum "Dirty Dozen" der besonders brutalen Serien gerechnet. Das ZDF verteidigte sich: Man habe sorgfältig von damals 44 Folgen nur 26 ausgewählt und auch die um Gewaltszenen gekürzt (ungekürzt passten US-Serien ohnehin nicht ins aktuelle Programmschema). Die mit flotten Sprüchen aufgepeppte Synchronisation trug ferner zur Entschärfung bei. Später hieß es, das ZDF hätte angeblich gern weitere Folgen aussgestrahlt, doch in den USA sei die Serie bereits eingestellt und alle produzierten Teile für den deutschen Markt schon ausgewertet worden. Die anderen 56 Folgen liefen also später im Privatfernsehen. 2004 kam eine Neuauflage als Spielfilm ins Kino, Ben Stiller und Owen Wilson spielten darin die Titelrollen.

Tough Starsky and educated Hutch are plainclothes cops taking on dope dealers, muggers and other thugs, aided by their red 1974 Torino and informant Huggy Bear. Both bachelors' private lives play as interweaving threads in the drama. This was TV's coolest buddy cop show, fueled by full-throttle car chases, offbeat humour, colourful characters and a hip vibe.

Cette série met en scène deux policiers de Bay City (Californie), une ville imaginaire calquée sur Los Angeles. Le brun David Michael Starsky , ayant grandi dans les rues de New York est un peu naïf et très extraverti, tandis que son acolyte, blond, Kenneth « Hutch » Hutchinson , est plus réservé et réfléchi. Malgré leurs apparentes différences, ils sont comme des frères l'un pour l'autre. Aidés par leur ami « Huggy Bear » dit « Huggy les bons tuyaux » , ils résolvent les affaires qui leur sont adressées par leur supérieur le capitaine Dobey de façon peu conventionnelle et très musclée.

Az ő különböző nyomozásaikat kíséri végig a sorozat, melyekben gyakran vitatkoznak egymással, de a végén mindig megoldják az ügyeiket, és közben még a szebbik nemmel is folyton próbálnak közelebbi kapcsolatra szert tenni. Epizódonként más-más bűnügyeket oldanak meg, de vannak több részes történetek is. A rendhagyó zsarupáros az egyéni öltözékével, a furcsa figurákból álló baráti körével, valamint a veszélyes helyzetekben tanúsított bátorságával és rátermettségével hívta föl magára a figyelmet. Kivételes, sajátos humorú fickók ők, és remek rendőrök, akik elképesztő magabiztossággal gyűjtik be a veszélyes elemeket, számolnak le a rablókkal, tolvajokkal, gyilkosokkal és kábítószer-kereskedőkkel.

Naar per il noto network ABC, Starsky & Hutch rimane uno degli appuntamenti televisivi più seguiti e amati dal pubblico mondiale, malgrado siano trascorsi ben 34 anni dal primo episodio, andato in onda nel lontano 30 aprile 1979. La fortunata serie TV, profondamente rappresentativa ed evocativa dell’atmosfera spensierata e anticonformista degli anni Settanta, si compone di 92 puntate, per un totale di 4 stagioni, e racconta le rocambolesche avventure di due poliziotti sui generis: i due sergenti Dave Starsky e Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson, in servizio in un’imprecisata città californiana, probabilmente Bay City, diversi per temperamento e stile di vita, ma uniti da una sincera e profonda amicizia. Intrepidi e sempre di buon umore, vestiti con jeans a zampa di elefante e giubbotti di pelle, i due tutori della legge svolgono il loro lavoro a bordo della mitica Ford Gran Torino, rossa e con una striscia bianca ai lati, nome in codice “Zebra 3”. Serial di successo, che ha fortemente impressionato e condizionato mode e atteggiamenti di quel periodo, Starsky & Hutch deve la sua enorme e longeva popolarità a tutta una serie di elementi che ne hanno da subito decretato il trionfo: l’ambientazione nei quartieri malfamati, l’ironia di dialoghi e situazioni e, soprattutto, il particolare sentimento d’amicizia tra i due protagonisti, un rapporto aperto, leale e assolutamente autentico.
