1948年，潜伏于国防部的地下党员任少白（肖战饰），因单线联系人牺牲而隐匿多年。当另一位地下党乔鸣羽暴露后，任少白冒险使用国防部电台，挽救了整个情报网。随后，借调查一起军饷贪污案，任少白与新上线彭永成接头，重新被启用。被“唤醒”后，他开始了在国防部的攀升之路，一路成为情报厅主任的亲信助手。乔鸣羽的遗孀兰幼因是一位数学天才，她一直暗中策划刺杀军统军官，其动机不明。任少白在斗争中屡立战功，与彭永成建立了默契，但身份暴露的风险如影随形。其间，他与兰幼因的关系由敌对逐渐转为合作。最终，为了保护任少白，彭永成牺牲，兰幼因也在彭永成和任少白的影响下转变信仰。任少白继续在隐蔽战线中发挥作用，为革命事业做出贡献。
