The Braddock and Jones families say goodbye to the 21st century and take their first steps into 1890. But as they move into the tiny cottages that will be their homes for the next month, they soon realise that this will not be 'pretend living'.

    It's the first day of spring on the 1890 smallholdings, but the weather is less than seasonal. Heavy snow closes the quarry but doesn't deter the landlord's agent from making an impromptu inspection. Now in their third week of Victorian life, the families are learning that they may have few rights in their harsh new world but they do at least have each other.

    It's the final week for the two families in 1890 Snowdonia but smallholdling life continues to bring daily hardships. A temperamental milk cow, a sickly lamb and a belligerent quarry steward cause tensions all round. Welcome relief comes in the form of a night on the tiles, 1890s style.
