故事發生在明朝弘治年間，宣府雞鳴縣楊家坪秀才楊凌大婚當日，突然因病倒下，大病初癒後，看著貧寒的家境，楊凌著即便自己一無所有，還一心一意對待自己的妻子韓幼娘，頓感羞愧難當。當下決定進京趕考，途中經過雞鳴縣時，楊凌憑藉自己的聰慧和博聞強記的本事，幫助馬昂洗清殺人嫌疑，因此得到當地縣令的賞識，通過這件事縣令的妹妹馬憐兒也對楊凌仰慕有加。楊凌通過破獲案件成為雞鳴縣的師爺，為雞鳴驛一戰立下汗馬功勞，偶然在戰場上認識了微服私訪的太子朱厚照，與其成為了生死之交的兄弟，因此跟隨太子進京伴讀。楊凌為太子在皇權之爭中出謀劃策，最終幫助朱厚照做了九五之尊。因此楊凌被皇上封為異性王爺，實現了從秀才到王爺富有傳奇色彩的人生。
