A look at the Roman army, a highly structured, highly organized fighting machine that left a great legacy to military campaigns for the next thousand years. The program traces the army's history from its establishment in 300 BC to 9 AD, when the German chief Akininis destroyed three legions of the Romans and transformed the army into a largely mercenary force staffed by Germans.
