As family and friends gather for Rachel and Gabriel's wedding, disaster strikes: the wedding car breaks down. Charlie is more interested in Thomas than Nick, but returns to Nick when Thomas rejects her, while a drunken Caroline bores Thomas. The wedding night ends in disappointment for Rachel.
On the morning after his wedding, Gabriel wakes up in his clothes. Not wanting Rachel to discover his methadone use, he asks Jessica if he can inject at the house, and she offers to inject him. Rachel, meanwhile, is feeling decidedly out of her depth...
Rachel upsets Jessica - and Gabriel - when she refuses an offer of help. It is clear that the Family is united in helping Gabriel beat his addiction - without Rachel's knowledge. Charlie plays a mischievous prank, and Simon courts controversy by agreeing to marry a divorced couple in church.
Rachel apologises to Jessica. As Edward sets off for a conference, Anne makes her excuses to Simon and finishes work early so that she can join him. Jessica discovers Charlie and Gabriel enjoying a boozy afternoon, and decides that Rachel must not see Gabriel in such a state.
Gabriel and Jessica go over their story for Rachel, as Edward and Anne share breakfast. Rachel is puzzled by Gabriel's bad mood, and Thomas turns up at the house to see him. Charlie enlists Thomas to help her get rid of Nick, and Jessica gives Edward a hard time; she knows of his affair.
Rachel starts her new job, and Lenny leaves Mark again. Jessica wants to move back home. Gabriel, Thomas and an uninvited Charlie have a get-together at the Lodge; it is broken up by Rachel's return. Charlie is still pursuing an indifferent Thomas, and Anne has news for Edward.
The family discusses Lenny's marital problems. Charlie, playing truant, turns up at Thomas's; try as he may, he cannot dislodge her. Anne tells Edward that she will not consider an abortion, and Edward tells Jessica of the pregnancy.
Enraged, Jessica instructs Edward to get Anne to terminate the pregnancy. She makes a date to meet him for dinner, but it is Jessica who turns up; a fierce row makes matters more desperate. Meanwhile, Charlie finally persuades Thomas to make a date.
Anne reveals to Edward how upset she is. Lenny refuses to see Mark, who ends up talking to Rachel and Jimmy; they urge him to patch things up with Lenny. After making love, Anne and Edward argue again - with tragic consequences.
Edward is going to pieces, and persuades Jessica to go to Anne's to remove the evidence of his cheque and messages on the answer-phone. On returning from the house, she is distraught. Jimmy, meanwhile, tries to persuade Lenny to see Mark.
Edward's guilt over Anne's death is weighing heavily. Simon, meanwhile, cannot understand Anne's absence, and leaves a message on her answer-phone. Intruding on a post-coital Rachel and Gabriel, Jessica invites the couple to a family dinner.
Jessica insists the family attends Anne's funeral, and Dr. Kenyon tells Edward he is unsure about revealing to Anne's mother that she was pregnant. Thomas invites Rachel to dinner, but the evening is to yield a devastating discovery for her.
While Lenny has now decided to divorce Mark, Rachel is struggling to come to terms with the idea that Thomas and Gabriel were lovers. Her mood darkens when Thomas and Charlie drop in to take them for a drink...
