Sisters Germaine, Aretha, Yoko, Mariah and baby Cher live with their brother Wyatt and their mother Della on a Wolverhampton council estate. Germaine is in love with local lout Lee Rind, and dreams of a Jane Austen-style romance. Aretha, with her love of Jung and Barack Obama, has a more realistic outlook. Constantly at loggerheads yet covering one another's backs, the sisters are trying to live the dream - while all Della wants them to do is mow the lawn.
Della and the children attempt to help Grampy following a family bereavement. Della decides to take him into the family home and as the funeral draws closer, Grampy's lacks any suitable footwear forcing Della to venture into her mother's sinister inner sanctum with Aretha, where they come face to face with her unusual family memorabilia.
Germaine gets asked out and premieres her 'personal fragrance' life-hack, and Della takes a trip to the 'Poor Woman's Ikea': a skip.
The Garrys landlady makes a surprise visit. Della evacuates the kids to their dad's while she goes emergency house-hunting.
Aretha stuns Della with a request to go to school, prompting memories from Della and Grampy. Germaine brings her new boyfriend over.
A pregnancy scare leads Della to recruit Germaine as an intern at work, while Aretha meets a kindred spirit with sensible shoes.
Della is forced into the tertiary economy at the local car boot sale by an unexpectedly painful utility bill, while Germaine becomes cousin Cathy's unwilling assistant.
Della takes the kids on holiday to Wales. Germaine and Aretha both suffer romantic setbacks.
