A young unexperienced journalist crosses the press line and begins snooping around. Nipper's three daughters ring him at work, as mum hasn't picked them up from ballet. The kid's end up at the rescue head quarters. Mickey is given the task of taking the gunman in some methadone, the hostage there to collect in Nippers wife Michelle. When Nipper is told he heads straight to the scene but doesn't tell the children. It is revealed that the gunman has a TV inside the bank as the young reporter reveals in a special bulletin against a news blackout that a Police Rescue officer's wife is one of the hostages after he overheard a conversation by Rescue squad members.
Mickey and Nipper help the survivors of a bus crash. Mickey is determined to prove the bus driver is not at fault and Nipper decides to foster a boy orphaned in the crash.
In search of a change, Georgia applies for Nipper's job. To Georgia's surprise she doesn't get it. Instead someone from head office gets the job. Sergeant Webb arrives in Rescue and quickly lays down the law with a series of new rules and procedures. As he sstruggles to earn the respect of the squad, Webb must deal with personal demons and professional problems. Angel shows signs of stress, both on and off the job. A series of high platform rescues change the squad and offers Webb a change at redemption.
After a young boy helps Angel in the rescue of a mechanic at closed Luna Park, he befriends Angel and tries to fix Angel up with his mother. Brian is concerned about an elderly man who is apparently seeking attention with a series of apparant nuisance calls. Mickey tries to help Angel sort out his life after his breakup with Helena.
A natural gas explosion leaves three people trapped two stories under ground. The squad tries to provide rescue but with time running out, a second gas explosion traps them as well. With a rapidly diminishing air supply and cyanide gas leaking into the cellar, Mickey, unwilling to abandon the trapped workers, disobeys an order from Inspector Adams to leave the scene.
After the rooftop rescue of a child left alone by a single mother, Georgia decides to give the drug addicted woman a second chance and doesn't report the violation to community services. When the mother disappears and is later picked up for theft, the children hide out in a train yard. A driver sues Angel for the damage incurred to his car during a rescue.
Kathy comforts a dying man. After he is given tranquilizers to deal with his pain, he mistakes Kathy for his wife and she must then pass on his last messages to his wife. Georgia revives a drowned swimmer who remains in a coma. Kathy comes to the aid of a pregnant woman trapped in an elevator.
Called to prevent two suicides, the squad helps arrest a woman and her brother who are BASE jumpers. Later, Mickey, who is intrigued by the pair, tries skydiving with them. A man asks Georgia for a copy of her accident report about an incident at an unsafe factory.

Angel and Georgia grow closer after he asks her to be his date to a cousin's wedding.
Three new recruits have joined Rescue, but only two can stay, a situation that creates some tension between the three as they compete for the two open spots. Mickey faces a new set of domestic challenges when his sons move in with him.

After a heroic rescue from the top of Centrepoint Tower, Angel and Tracey arrive at the scene of a car accident to find his brother Con injured and his other brother Paulie dead. The driver of the other car is drunk and cops a beating from Angel. When Internal Affairs gets involved, Tracey and Angel are questioned about the incident but when the man dies in hospital, Angel is arrested and charged with manslaughter.
Several members of the squad are rethinking their future. Will they stay or leave Rescue? How will it all end? Mickey has the dirty task of rescuing a man from a chimney. Angel is given a sendoff after he is dismissed from the Police Service. The squad races an oncoming storm in their attempt to rescue two children lost in a vast system of stormwater tunnels. Georgia and Alex accept the reality of their relationship. Georgia is farwelled as she transfers out of Rescue to join a youth crime task force. Surrounded by change, Mickey reconsiders his own future at Rescue and resigns.
