Pippi und ihr Vater Kapitän Langstrumpf erleben spannende Abenteuer nach bekannter und bewährter Manier: Sie werden auf hoher See von einem gewaltigen Sturm überrascht, bei dem Kapitän Langstrumpf über Bord geht. Pippi, die sich mit Herrn Nilsson, dem freundlichen Äffchen, und dem Pferd "Kleiner Onkel" retten kann, bezieht Quartier in der Villa Kunterbunt. Die Nachbarkinder Tommy und Annika sind begeistert von ihrer neuen, immer gut gelaunten Altersgenossin und deswegen für jeden Spaß, den Pippi zuverlässig ausheckt, zu haben. Das fröhliche Durcheinander ruft allerdings die strenge Fürsorgerin Prysselius auf den Plan, die Pippi zu ihrem eigenen Besten in ein Kinderheim stecken will. Pippi leistet tapfer Widerstand, auch gelegentlich mit Hilfe ihrer phänomenalen Muskelkraft. Gerät aber, als zwei Ganoven die mit Goldmünzen gefüllte Truhe in der Villa Kunterbunt stehlen wollen, in arge Bedrängnis. Da steht der tot geglaubte Kapitän Langstrumpf in der Tür.
The film begins with Pippi (Melissa Altro) sailing around the world with her father, Captain Efraim Longstocking (Gordon Pinsent), her pet horse, Old Man, her pet monkey, Mr. Nilsson, and various members of the ship's crew. One night during a hurricane, the captain is washed over board into the sea. As he drifts off, he calls to Pippi that he will "meet her in Villa Villekulla". To that effect, Pippi and her pet animals make their way home, Villa Villekulla, to await his return. Not long after arriving, she makes friends with the two children across the street — Tommy and Annika (Noah Reid and Olivia Garratt), who are captivated by her free spirit and fun-loving attitude. They soon convince her to go to school (for the first time in her life) where she gets into trouble, despite winning the hearts of her classmates.
Pippi also soon attracts the attention of a local social worker, Mrs. Prysselius (Catherine O'Hara)), who conspires to put her into foster care. When Miss Prysselius goes to speak with the local law enforcement of the need for the girl to be placed in a home for orphans, she lets certain details (her lack of adult supervision, living alone, and having a large supply of gold coins kept out in the open) be revealed to a pair of thieves already in jail. The thieves, Bloom and Thunder-Karlsson, decide to rob Pippi themselves once they break out of jail.

Fifi Brindacier est la fille d'Efraïm Brindacier, un célèbre marin. Alors que Fifi se trouve avec son père sur son navire, subitement, un orage apparaît et le père de Fifi tombe à l'eau. Fifi se retrouve alors orpheline...
C'est alors qu'elle part vivre dans la Villa Villekulla avec Annika et Tommy pour voisins. Carl et bloom, deux bandits, entendent madame Leticia Paradis dire aux policiers de la ville qu’une petite fille du nom de Fifi est seule avec un coffre rempli de pièces d’or. Ils vont donc s’échapper de prison et essayer d’entrer dans la villa Villekulla pour voler l’or. Mais, Fifi ne se laisse pas faire ! Elle installe des pièges à "spling" pendant qu’elle va au cirque avec Tommy et Annika. À son retour, elle découvre que Carl et Bloom sont entrés dans la maison, mais ont été piégés par la charmante petite fille aux taches de rousseurs. Son père revient à ce moment et est content de revoir sa fille
