At the beginning of this year, Mrs Thatcher became the longest-serving British Prime Minister this century. Now in its third term in office, her Government shows no sign of flagging. It is embarking upon a set of radical proposals for education, for local Government, for welfare provision and for privatising water and electricity industries. Her critics, not all of them from the Opposition benches, accuse her of pursuing her vision of a new Britain at the expense of the social fabric of society.
