Yamaoka encounters an assertive woman in the street and saves her from a speeding car. The woman then trips and breaks the heel of her shoe and she blames Yamaoka. He discovers that she is Mariko Niki's aunt Teruko. When they meet with her date, the writer Mr. Katamori, she insults him for being late and poorly dressed, and leaves.
