Liz becomes troubled by the relationship between Graham and his mother as Graham's daily diet of doughnuts and junk food continues, not to mention the bickering. Agoraphobic ex-con Billy finds himself in a spot of trouble and Liz meets a new patient called Jack who is a troubled young former soldier.
Community psychiatric nurse Liz wonders why Graham is in such high spirits, while former soldier Jack recalls a grim time in Helmand before retreating to his `safe place'. Billy tries his hand at preparing vegetables from Liz's allotment, despite the fact that they are covered in soil and he doesn't like mud.
Liz's personal problems come to a head and she is a lot less sympathetic with her ex-husband than with her service users, while Billy notices that she isn't sharing her chocolate. Former soldier Jack begins to build himself a dug-out in the back garden, Herbert confides that he would like some female company, and Graham manages to rise from his bed and walk.
