مفيد الوحش ابن القرية الريفي البسيط والقبضاي والذي شحذته الحياة البسيطة والقاسية وجعلت منه شخصًا قاسي الملامح حاد النظرة، تتطور شخصيته باتجاه تصاعدي ضمن المقاومة الوطنية للإستعمار الفرنسي وفي سجون الإحتلال لتجعل منه وطنيًا يحلم بالحرية والحياة، فتتعاظم قوة الوحش بداخله ويتعاظم معها إيمانه بالمقاومة كسبيل وحيد للتحرر، عندها يتحول الفتى إلى أسطورة ليتغنى الجميع بقوته وشجاعته.
