A genius girl and a young scientist and the heir of the Capsule Corp. called Bulma meets Son Goku, a strong boy with a monkey tail and fantastic martial art skills. Seeing how strong Goku is, Bulma tells him to accompany her to search for the seven Dragon Balls, which are able to grant any wish to the one who collects them all. Goku reveals that his grandfather, Son Gohan had given him a four star dragon ball. While Bulma herself has found two dragon balls herself. Bulma takes Goku into her capsule house, where he is astonished by modern technology and female anatomy. Already having three Dragon Balls together, Goku and Bulma start traveling, and soon they meet an old man called Kame-Sen'nin who gives them the fourth Dragon Ball and Kinto'un, a cloud which Goku can fly on, as gifts for returning his turtle. Soon they get the fifth Dragon Ball after being joined by a shapeshifting pig called Oolong. While traveling in the desert, they are attacked by a powerful bandit named Yamcha and a flying cat-like animal named Pu'ar (who can also shapeshift). They soon learn about the Dragon Balls and attempt to steal them so Yamcha can have confidence in talking to girls. They later discover that the sixth Dragon Ball is in a burning castle, and its owner, Gyū-Maō the Ox-King, tells them that Kame-Sen'nin can stop the fire.
Goku finds Gyū-Maō's daughter, Chi-Chi, and goes with her to Kame-Sen'nin's house. Kame-Sen'nin agrees to put out the fire and uses a powerful energy blast called Kamehameha to do it, and thus find the sixth Dragon Ball, despite blowing away the castle. Later, soldiers of Pilaf steal Bulma's Dragon Balls. Yamcha helps them to enter Pilaf's castle but they are trapped in a room. With the seven Dragon Balls reunited, Pilaf summons the dragon Shenlong who would grant his wish of conquering the world, but Oolong interrupts him by wishing for a girl's panties, making the Balls and the dragon disappear. Angered, Pilaf traps Goku and his friends in an unbreakable room, but Goku looks at the full moon, mysteriously causing him to transform into a Great Ape that destroys the castle. Yamcha and Pu'ar manage to cut his tail off and Goku returns to being a child without knowing what happened. Goku separates from his friends and goes to train with Kame-Sen'nin, who tells him that he must bring a g
A bald monk named Kuririn makes his way to Kame-Sen'nin's island, and he demands training too. With him, Goku rescues a thief named Lunch to take her to Kame-Sen'nin's house, so that he agrees to start the training. Kame-Sen'nin gives them strange methods to train such as running through jungles, finding rocks or delivering milk all across the island. Kame-Sen'nin continually makes the training harder by having the two wear a 2-ton turtle shell. After finishing their training, Kame-Sen'nin takes them to the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, which is a fighting tournament that reunites the strongest warriors from the planet. Goku and Kuririn easily win their first fights and manage to enter the finals. Kuririn fights against Bacterian (バクテリアン, Bakuterian), a fat man who uses disgusting tactics to fight, such as his strong smell and flatulence, but Kuririn manages to defeat him by his own methods.
In the next match, Yamcha is easily defeated by an old man named Jackie Chun, who is Kame-Sen'nin in disguise. After that, a man from a village suffering from a drought named Namu (ナム) beats a girl named Ran Fuan (ランファン, Ran Fan), who uses striptease as an attack. Goku then defeats a dinosaur called Giran (ギラン), after a prolonged battle in which Goku's tail reappears and Giran surrenders. In the first semifinal, Kuririn faces Jackie Chun, and is defeated as he is easily surpassed at speed. In the second semifinal, Goku fights against Namu and both use techniques to fight in the air. Namu loses, but Kame-Sen'nin helps him bring back water to help the drought, while also telling him that he entered the contest so his students wouldn't win and become overconfident in life. Then, the final match between Goku and Jackie starts. The two exchange attacks, and the match leans heavily towards Goku's favor.
During the fight, Goku sees the full moon and he once again turns into a Great Ape. As Goku gets out of control, Jackie performs his Kamehameha technique to destroy the moon. Goku returns to his human state and as he wakes up, the fight continues and Goku uses his kamehameha. With both fighters being tired, they are only to perform a few moves, and Jackie wins the tournament when the two exchange kicks because his kick struck deeper than Goku's. Goku decides to search for the Dragon Ball that his grandfather left to him and leaves. However, Goku gets lost and is attacked by villains from the Red Ribbon Army organization, and appears frozen in a snow village. He is rescued by a family, and as he discovers that the Red Ribbon has kidnapped the mayor, Goku goes to the Muscle Tower base to stop them. He defeats the legendary robot Full Metal Jacket, and fights Sergeant Major Purple, who tries to hide from Goku by using subtle techniques.
As Purple is defeated by Goku, he awakes the Mechanical Man #8 to kill Goku, but the android negates to attack him. Instead, Goku and #8 become friends and both find the leader Colonel White, who traps them in the bottom of the tower with a monster called the Jiggler. Goku beats the Jiggler using the low temperatures, and they go to General White again. As White shoots Goku, #8 furiously knocks White. Seeing that the Dragon Ball's radar is broken, Goku goes to the West City to ask to Bulma to fix it. Bulma decides to join Goku and discovers the Dragon Ball is under the water. Kame-Sen'nin gives them a submarine to search for the Dragon Ball and Kuririn joins them, while General Blue of the Red Ribbon and his men start to chase Goku and company.
Goku, Bulma and Kuririn find a pirate's dungeon under the sea and enter to find the Dragon Ball. Goku encounters a pirate robot and a giant octopus, but General Blue confuses him with false information separating him from his friends. After destroying its traps, they are attacked by General Blue, who wants to steal the treasure from the dungeon. As they fight, the dungeon starts collapsing and they escape. Goku finds a Dragon Ball, but as they return to Kame-Sen'nin's, General Blue steals the Ball and Goku follows him. At some point, Goku and Blue appear in Penguin Village from the Dr. Slump series. As Goku loses Blue, he meets a girl robot Arale, who takes him with her creator to repair the radar which has been broken again. Blue steals the radar but he is then easily defeated by Arale. Goku is given a new radar and goes to Karin Sanctuary where the next Ball is located. However, two Native Americans, Bora (ボラ) and Upa (ウパ), already have the ball.
In Karin Sanctuary, Goku befriends the two Native Americans, Bora and Upa, who gift him the four-star Dragon Ball, which his grandfather originally gave to Goku. The Red Ribbon sends the professional assassin Taopaipai to kill Goku. Once finding Goku, Taopaipai kills Bora and easily defeats Goku to the point where he thinks he died. After Goku recovers, he decides to revive Bora, but as he first needs to defeat Taopaipai, he climbs the Karin Tower to meet its hermit so he can become stronger. There he meets Karin, a cat that trains him by saying that the water he has can make him stronger. In the end, Karin reveals that it was just a joke to make Goku train harder. After a few days, Goku easily defeats Taopaipai and goes to the Red Ribbon base, demolishing its security. When Adjutant Black tells Commander Red he needs to abandon the base, it is revealed that the only reason Red wanted the Dragon Balls was to become tall. Angered at this, Black fires a pistol into Red's head, killing hi
When reuniting with his friends, Bulma tells Goku that the last Dragon Ball is impossible to find for unknown reasons and Kame-Sen'nin tells him that his sister, Baba Uranai, can find the Ball. Goku, Yamcha, Kuririn and Pu'ar meet Baba Uranai who explains them that they have to beat her five warriors in order to explain where is the ball, unless they have one million dollars. Pu'ar and Upa defeat Count Dracula by making signs of vampires's weaknesses, and then Yamcha defeats the Invisible Man by using Kame-Sen'nin's nosebleed to reveal him. The next fighter is the Mummy, who defeats Yamcha but he is later defeated by Goku, who then defeats the Devil. The Devil uses his beam to make the evil in Goku's heart explode, but the attack fails when it is revealed that Goku has no evil in his heart. He has the last fight against a masked old man, who is Goku's deceased grandfather, Son Gohan. After a prolonged fight, Gohan gives up confessing he wanted to see his grandson. The two share an emot
As a reward for defeating the five warriors, Baba Uranai tells the location of the last Dragon Ball and Goku goes to find it. He confronts Pilaf and his soldiers, and after defeating them Goku gets their Dragon Ball. Goku then summons Shenlong and wishes to revive Bora. Three years later, Goku reunites with his friends and enters the new Tenka'ichi Budōkai. He also meets Kame-Sen'nin's rival, Tsuru-Sen'nin, the Crane Hermit, who has taken his two students to fight. The first match is between Yamcha and the Crane Hermit's student, Tenshinhan. After a violent fight, Tenshinhan breaks Yamcha's left leg and wins. Yamcha is taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. In the second match Jackie Chun easily defeats the "Man-Wolf" (男狼, Otoko Ōkami) and in the third, Kuririn faces the Crane Hermit's student, Chaozu. As both use their techniques, Goku discovers that the Crane Hermit is Taopaipai's brother and the Crane Hermit wants to take revenge for Taopaipai's murder.
Kuririn manages to defeat Chaozu by his lack of knowledge in math, and then Goku easily defeats his opponent, the eight-time champion Panpoot (パンプット, Panputto). The semifinal starts between Tenshinhan and Jackie Chun. Impressed by Tenshinhan's abilities, Jackie gives up telling him that he could use his powers for good, and later reveals his true identity to him. In the other semifinal, Goku faces Kuririn, and the former wins. The finals start and Goku fights against Tenshinhan. Both fight at the same level, but as Goku takes advantage, Chaozu is commanded by Tsuru-Sen'nin to paralyze him. Tenshinhan tells Chaozu not to do it and Kame-Sen'nin attacks Tsuru-Sen'nin, kicking him out of the contest. Tenshinhan and Chaozu decide to give up on the Crane Hermit's evil ways, and Tenshinhan gives up on his dream of becoming the greatest assassin. The two begin to fight fairly.
Tenshinhan destroys the battle arena using his kikōhō technique, and both continue fighting in the air. The first person who falls from the air will lose, and it seems that Tenshinhan will win, due to his levitation technique. As Goku is about to win, he is hit by a truck and falls first, making Tenshinhan win the tournament. Later, Goku finds Kuririn dead and immediately goes to find the murderer by searching the Dragon Ball he stole from Kuririn. Kame-Sen'nin discovers that the planner of the murder is a demon called the Demon King Piccolo. Goku finds Kuririn's assassin, an offspring from Piccolo named Tambourine, but he is unable to defeat as he is very tired. As Goku recovers, he meets a swordsman named Yajirobe who hates Goku due to stealing his fish, and they both start killing Piccolo's offspring. They are then confronted by Piccolo and Goku faces him. Goku is unable to inflict him any damage and is defeated, but Yajirobe escapes with him.
Kame-Sen'nin tracks down Piccolo and decides that he will risk his life to kill him. Using the forbidden Mafū-ba technique, Kame-Sen'nin tries to imprison Piccolo in a rice cooker, but misses and dies. Piccolo summons Shenlong and wishes to become young again, after killing Chaozu who tried to interrupt him. As he regains his youth, Piccolo starts conquering the world by defeating the King of the World's army, while Tambourine is commanded to kill Namu and Giran. Meanwhile, Yajirobe takes Goku to the Karin Tower to heal him, and Karin makes him drink a sacred water that is rumored to be poisoned to make him stronger. Goku risks his life to drink the poisoned water, but he lives. Tenshinhan tries to seal Piccolo like Kame-Sen'nin, but fails and is defeated by his offspring, Drum. Goku arrives and kills Drum. He then faces Piccolo and manages to overpower him.
Goku continues facing Piccolo, and Goku punches a hole through his abdomen, but Piccolo makes a son, who is also known as Piccolo. Goku is then rescued by Yajirobe who takes him to Karin Sanctuary. Karin tells him that Shenlong was destroyed by Piccolo, but its creator, God, is able to restore him. Goku ascends the Karin Tower and arrives the Sacred Temple to meet up with God. First he meets Mr. Popo, God's assistant, and it is revealed that Mr. Popo is stronger than Goku, so he cannot see God. Angry, Goku demands training to see God, but Mr. Popo lets Goku see God due to his persistence. "God" is better known as Kami-sama, who is revealed to be Piccolo's good side and agrees to revive Shenlong, so that it could revive the ones who were killed by Piccolo. Mr. Popo remolds him, and Kuririn, Chaozu, Kame-Sen'nin, Namu and Giran get revived. However, Goku tells Kami to train him, so that he can defeat Piccolo's last offspring who was born before he died. Three years later, a taller Goku r
In the first fight, Teshinhan fights and defeats his mentor Taopaipai as a cyborg, whom he is disappointed by his desire to kill. Taopaipai cuts Tenshinhan with a knife in order to kill him, getting disqualified and then subdued by his opponent. In the second fight, Goku easily defeats Chi-Chi, the unknown woman, who was angry that he did not recognize her, and so Goku agrees to marry her as she asked him in their childhood. In the next fight, Kuririn faces Piccolo, and as the latter surpasses him, Kuririn gives up and loses. In the fourth match, Yamcha fights against a man called Shen, who is really Kami possessing him. Yamcha loses and the semifinal between Goku and Tenshinhan starts. Tenshinhan uses a new technique to divide his body in four. However, Goku discovers that his power was also divided and manages to defeat him. The second semifinal starts, and Kami fights against his evil self, Piccolo, who is revealed to be Demon Junior.
Kami tries to imprison Piccolo in a bottle, but Piccolo counterattacks, sealing Kami instead. Piccolo wins the fight and eats the bottle so that Kami will not bother him. Then, the final between Goku and Piccolo starts and both exchange attacks. As Piccolo transforms his body into a giant, Goku enters his mouth and Piccolo vomits up the bottle. Kami is freed by Kuririn, getting Piccolo angry. Piccolo returns to his normal state, and uses his strongest technique to explode the whole area. Although they remain weak due to the attack, Goku and Piccolo keep fighting. Piccolo manages to seriously injure Goku, but as he think he has won, Goku throws Piccolo out of the arena and win. Goku decides to leave Piccolo alive since if he dies Kami will also die, and leaves with Chi-Chi.
Five years after defeating Piccolo at the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, Son Goku has married Chi-Chi and they have a son named Gohan. When Goku and Gohan visit his teacher Kame-Sen'nin, they are confronted by a man called Raditz. He tells Goku that he is his brother and that Goku is a member of the Saiyan race who was sent to Earth to destroy it. Raditz kidnaps Gohan and tells Goku to kill 100 people within the next 24 hours. Piccolo agrees to help Goku defeat Raditz, finding him to be a greater enemy than Goku. When the two are about to be defeated, Gohan furiously attacks Raditz, enabling Goku and Piccolo to fatally wound Raditz at the cost of Goku's own life. However, before he dies, Raditz reveals that two Saiyans stronger than him will come to Earth in one year's time.
Piccolo decides to train Gohan to see if he is able to use his hidden powers to defeat the Saiyans, whereas Goku is brought to the Other World by Kami to train with Kaiō-sama. After running along the Serpentine Road, Goku meets Kaiō-sama and starts training with him under strong gravity. After finishing his training, Goku is revived by the Dragon Balls, but he is forced to run again if he wants to return to Earth. The two Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa, arrive on Earth and confront the opposing warriors Piccolo, Gohan, Kuririn, Yamcha, Chaozu and Tenshinhan. Nappa creates plant-based monsters known as Cultivars (栽培マン, Saibaiman) that fight the warriors, with one managing to kill Yamcha with a suicide attack. After Kuririn and Piccolo destroy all of the Cultivars, the group is confronted by an angry Nappa.
Tenshinhan and Chaozu sacrifice their lives in an attempt to defeat Nappa, but he remains unharmed. Nappa continues to battle Kuririn, Gohan and Piccolo, remaining as the strongest combatant. Gohan attempts to fight him alone, but Piccolo sacrifices himself to save him from Nappa's ultimate attack. Piccolo's death also causes Kami to fade from existence and thus, the Dragon Balls turn to stone permanently. When Nappa is about to finish off Gohan, Goku arrives and takes his place. Goku easily defeats Nappa, who is later executed by a furious Vegeta. Goku then faces off against Vegeta, but is easily surpassed by him.
To fight against Vegeta, Goku performs his Kaiō-Ken technique to multiply his energy but is left considerably exhausted. After being overwhelmed in battle, Vegeta creates an artificial moon to turn into a Great Ape, and starts torturing the weakened Goku. Gohan, Kuririn and Yajirobe go to Goku's aid and manage to cut off Vegeta's tail, returning him to his human state. Vegeta is still able to fight them and Goku hands over the remainder of the Genki-Dama he had formed to Kuririn. Kuririn throws the Genki-Dama at Vegeta who dodges it, but Gohan manages to reflect it back at Vegeta, who manages to survive the attack. As Vegeta prepares to kill the group, Gohan's Saiyan tail appears, causing him to turn into a Great Ape. Gohan almost kills Vegeta, but his tail is cut off at the last moment.
Kuririn attempts to kill Vegeta with Yajirobe's sword, but Goku pleads him not to do it as he wants to fight him again. Bulma and her friends arrive to rescue them and take them to the hospital. With the Dragon Balls no longer functional, they decide to go to Piccolo's home planet, Namek, in order to find its Dragon Balls so that they can wish Kami and Piccolo back and restore the Dragon Balls, thus allowing them to revive Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chaozu. Kami's servant, Mr. Popo, gives them the spaceship that Kami originally came to Earth in, and Bulma, along with Kuririn and Gohan, heads to Namek. Goku is initially unable to go due to his injuries, but after being healed by the newly grown senzu beans, he goes to Namek using a spaceship that Bulma's father built. On Namek, Gohan and Kuririn discover that a powerful villain named Freeza is searching for the Dragon Balls and to get them, he starts killing natives. Vegeta goes to Namek with the same purpose, also planning to defeat Freeza.
Several warriors from Namek try to stop Freeza, but they are all killed by his soldiers. Gohan and Kuririn rescue the only Namek survivor, a kid called Dende, but they are followed by one of Freeza's men, Dodoria (ドドリア). As they try to escape, Dodoria is attacked by Vegeta, who wants to know if it is true that Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta. As Dodoria reveals that is true, Vegeta kills him and starts searching for the Dragon Balls. Dende takes Kuririn to the Dragon Balls' creator, the Great Elder (最長老, Saichōrō), to get some help. Vegeta comes across another one of Freeza's men, Zarbon, and fights him. Zarbon performs a transformation that increases his powers, allowing him to defeat Vegeta.
Kuririn meets the Great Elder who gives him a Dragon Ball to help him. Zarbon is ordered by Freeza to find Vegeta, who already has a Dragon Ball and thus, his location is unknown. Vegeta takes advantage of the situation and, after recovering, he becomes strong enough to kill Zarbon thanks to the Saiyans' genetic ability. Kuririn takes Gohan to visit the Great Elder to see if he can awake his hidden power, but Vegeta finds them. Before attacking them, Vegeta discovers that Freeza's elite soldiers, the Ginyu Force, have arrived on Namek and agrees to join forces with Kuririn and Gohan to confront them. Captain Ginyu steals their Dragon Balls and takes them to Freeza, while his companions faces their opponents. Vegeta decapitates Gurd with a single blow, but he is then defeated by Reacoom.
Both Gohan and Kuririn try to fight Reacoom but are defeated. Before Reacoom can finish off Gohan, Goku arrives and knocks Reacoom out cold with a single punch. Goku then starts fighting against Jheese and Butta. When Butta is incapacitated, Jheese escapes to call Ginyu, and Vegeta murders the helpless Reacoom and Butta. Unable to summon the dragon, Ginyu attacks Goku in order to learn how to, but is easily surpassed. Freeza visits the Great Elder with the same purpose, and the Namekian Nail (ネイル, Neiru) tries to stop him. Seeing that he cannot defeat Goku, Ginyu performs a technique to exchange their bodies, allowing him to take Goku's body. Ginyu and Jheese find and attack Vegeta, Gohan and Kuririn, but Ginyu is unable to control Goku's energy.
Having become stronger again, Vegeta kills Jheese and faces Ginyu. Ginyu tries to exchange bodies with Vegeta, but Goku intercepts the attack, recovering his original body. Ginyu once again tries to change bodies, but Goku throws a Namekian Frog in the way, trapping Ginyu in its body. Vegeta sends Goku to a medical machine to recover from his injuries, and Kuririn and Gohan go ask Dende to call the dragon. The Namekian dragon, Porunga, is able to grant three wishes but can only revive one person at a time. They ask to revive Piccolo so that Kami and Earth's Dragon Balls can return. After they wish for Piccolo to be sent to Namek, Porunga disappears due to the Great Elder's death. A furious Freeza arrives and attacks them, showing a transformation that increases his powers. Gohan is able to fight Freeza, but then he is replaced by Piccolo. Piccolo proves to be a match for Freeza as he has fused with Nail, who was on the verge of death after fighting Freeza.
Freeza uses his second transformation, managing to surpass Piccolo, but Gohan comes to his aid. Vegeta forces Kuririn to injure him and then has Dende heal him, so that he can become stronger. As Vegeta is healed, Freeza performs his final transformation. Freeza then kills Dende so that he will not heal anybody else and Vegeta faces him, but is unable to inflict much damage on Freeza. After recovering from his wounds, Goku goes to stop Freeza, who kills Vegeta before their fight starts. Goku manages to fight equally against Freeza, who reveals he will start using only half of his maximum energy.
Unable to defeat Freeza, Goku performs the Genki-Dama, taking energy from few planets around. Goku launches the Genki-Dama at Freeza, causing a big explosion on Namek. Everybody gathers back together, only for Freeza to appear before them, severely injuring Piccolo and killing Kuririn in the process. Goku's rage finally erupts, causing a strange transformation that turns his hair gold and his eyes bright blue; he has become the first Super Saiyan in over 1,000 years. In this new state, Goku easily overpowers a horrified Freeza, who launches an energy blast straight at Namek's core so that the planet will explode within five minutes. Freeza then uses all his power, and continues facing Goku. Kaiō-sama has Shenlong revive everyone killed by Freeza and his men, and Porunga transports them all to Earth with the exception of Freeza and Goku, the latter wanting to avenge Kuririn's death.
Goku defeats Freeza and tries to escape Namek just as it explodes. Bulma and her friends try to revive him on Earth with Porunga, but they discover that Goku is alive, training on another planet. Using Porunga, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Kuririn and Chaozu are revived, while the Namekians depart to live on another planet. One year later, the warriors discover that Freeza is alive and is coming with his father, King Cold (コルド大王, Korudo Daiō), to destroy Earth. However, Freeza's entire group is attacked by a teenager who transforms into a Super Saiyan and slaughters them. The teenager then meets up with Gohan's group, claiming that he is going to wait for Goku to return. The teenager reveals his identity to Goku as Trunks, the future son of Bulma and Vegeta. He further informs Goku that two androids created by Dr. Gero of the Red Ribbon Army will appear in three years to kill him. Trunks returns to the future in his time machine and three years later, Goku and his friends reunite to fight the two androids.
Goku's group separates to find the androids, and Yamcha ends up being attacked by them. Goku and his friends save him, and the former transforms into a Super Saiyan to fight Android #19. Although Goku overpowers #19, he is suddenly weakened by a heart disease that Trunks warned he would have. Vegeta appears to save Goku, who is taken to his house by Yamcha. Vegeta transforms into a Super Saiyan and easily kills #19. Android #20, who is in fact the creator of the androids, Dr. Gero, escapes to his laboratory and is followed by the warriors. As Piccolo finds and overpowers Gero, Trunks appears, saying that he is not one of the two androids from the future. Gero escapes again and awakes the androids #17 and #18, who quickly turn against him.
Android #17 kills Gero and #18 awakens another android called #16, who is in fact a pure robot. Vegeta follows and challenges them to a fight. #18 soon defeats Vegeta, causing Piccolo, Trunks and Tenshinhan to interrupt her. However, #17 joins her and all the warriors are defeated with the exception of Kuririn, to whom they explain that their aim is to kill Goku. Furious at not being able to defeat the androids, Piccolo requests Kami to fuse bodies with him so that he can defeat them. Meanwhile, Trunks is told by Bulma that a new time machine has appeared. After investigating it, several people start disappearing around the world. Kami decides to allow Piccolo to absorb his power, but only because there is a new enemy more dangerous than the androids. After fusing with Kami, Piccolo finds a strange creature that is absorbing people and has the powers of several known warriors.
The creature reveals his name as Cell, the last creation of Dr. Gero using cells from several warriors. Cell says he came from a future in which Trunks destroyed the androids, so he killed him and stole his time machine to come to this time and absorb #17 and #18 to reach his perfect form. Piccolo overpowers Cell, who escapes in order to become stronger. Meanwhile, Goku has recovered from his heart disease and takes Vegeta, Gohan and Trunks to Kami's Palace to train in the Room of Spirit and Time, which allows them to train what would be a year in just a day on the outside to surpass their Super Saiyan powers. Trunks and Vegeta enter first, while Piccolo is confronted by the androids and faces #17. After absorbing several people, Cell interrupts them and defeats Piccolo. #16 fights against Cell and overwhelms him, but Cell hides to absorb #17 and evolves into his semi-perfect form. The new Cell easily defeats #16 and attempts to absorb #18, but Tenshinhan intervenes.
Goku goes to rescue Tenshinhan and Piccolo and takes them to Kami's Palace. As they return, Trunks and Vegeta finish training in and go to face Cell, while Goku and Gohan enter the Room of Spirit and Time. Vegeta fights against Cell and reveals that he has accessed an enhanced version of the Super Saiyan transformation. Vegeta easily defeats Cell, but as the latter tells him that he needs to absorb #18 to become stronger, Vegeta allows him to absorb her. Cell finds #18 and Trunks tries to stop him, but he is opposed by Vegeta. Cell absorbs #18, reaching his perfect form and continues his fight against Vegeta. This time, Vegeta is easily defeated by Cell and Trunks transforms into a version of Super Saiyan that is more powerful than Vegeta's.
In his new state, Trunks becomes strong enough to overpower Cell, but Cell defeats him as that transformation also makes him slower. Cell tells Trunks that in a few weeks, he will start a new tournament called the Cell Games, in which anybody can face him. Goku and Gohan leave the Room of Spirit and Time, and learn of Cell's announcement. Goku decides he and Gohan will not train again to defeat Cell, and both spend the time in their Super Saiyan state to control its power. During that period, Goku also goes to Namek to recruit Dende to be the new Guardian of Earth, so that he can recreate Earth's Dragon Balls. The Cell Games start, but before Goku fights against Cell, he is interrupted by the martial artist Mr. Satan, who is defeated by Cell in a short time.
Goku starts fighting against Cell and soon both use all their power. Goku performs a Kamehameha with all his energy, but Cell regenerates, both becoming exhausted. Goku then gives up and tells Gohan to fight in his place, saying that his hidden power will be enough to defeat Cell. However, Gohan is unable to use his power and Cell attempts to make him angry so that he could use it. Android #16 tries to stop Cell, but his body is destroyed in the attempt. Cell creates miniature versions of himself called Cell Juniors to attack Gohan's friends in order to anger Gohan. #16's still-functioning head encourages Gohan to fight, before it is crushed by Cell. Gohan becomes enraged, and undergoes a Super Saiyan transformation that makes him strong enough to kill all the Cell Juniors.
Gohan easily overwhelms Cell and makes him regurgitate #18 from his stomach, causing Cell to revert to his semi-perfect form. As Cell attempts to self-destruct to destroy Earth, Goku teleports him to Kaiō-sama's planet so that it will not destroy Earth, resulting in the deaths of Kaiō-sama, Bubbles, #17 and himself. However, Cell is able to regenerate and returns to Earth, killing Trunks. Cell attempts to perform a Kamehameha strong enough to destroy the entire solar system, but Gohan receives help from Goku from the Other World to perform a Kamehameha and faces Cell's one. With help from Vegeta, Gohan overpowers Cell and completely eradicates him. Later, as the group summons Shenlong to revive Goku, he informs them that he wishes to remain dead. He also tells Gohan to take over his role as protector of Earth. The now-revived Trunks then returns to the future, where he is able to kill the androids.
Goten and Trunks confront each other in the final. Trunks wins and is allowed to fight Mr. Satan as a reward. Scared by Trunks' strength, Mr. Satan pretends to allow Trunks to defeat him. The adults' tournament starts, and both Goten and Trunks knock out the fighter Mighty Mask (マイティマスク, Maiti Masuku) in order to use his costume to participate in the adults' tournament. Piccolo forfeits his fight when he faces Kaiō-shin, who is the universe's lord of lords. In the third fight, Videl fights against a man named Spopovich who has gained abnormal powers. Spopovich easily defeats Videl and almost kills her in the process. In the fourth fight, Gohan faces Kaiō-shin's guardian, Kibito (キビト), but he is attacked by Spopovich and his partner Yamu, who steal his energy and place it in a bottle. Both men escape, and Kaiō-shin asks Goku and the other to follow him. While following Yamu and Spopovich, Kaiō-shin explains that the warlock Bobbidi plans to awake a powerful monster known as Majin Boo, but he first needs to absorb the energy from powerful warriors.
Goku and his friends arrive at Bobbidi's base, but are then attacked by his servant Dabra, who kills Kibito and petrifies Kuririn and Piccolo. As they enter the hideout, Goku and Vegeta easily defeat their respective enemies, while Dabra prepares to fight Gohan. Meanwhile, the tournament continues, and Goten and Trunks are disqualified for stealing Mighty Mask's costume. #18 allows Mr. Satan to defeat her, but only if he gives her double the amount of money the winner gets. Gohan faces Dabra, but the latter escapes to tell Bobbidi that they can control Vegeta since he is evil. Vegeta allows them to control him to make him stronger and starts fighting against Goku. Gohan and Kaiō-shin find Dabra and Bobbidi, but Boo awakes because he is receiving Goku's energy.
Boo awakes as a dangerous obese creature that easily defeats Gohan and Kaiō-shin. Dabra tries to destroy him, but he is killed by being turned into a cookie and eaten by Boo. After knocking Goku out, Vegeta appears to defeat Boo, but Boo regenerates after receiving all of his attacks. When Boo tortures Vegeta, Trunks and Goten save him. Vegeta then knocks both of the children out and gives them to Piccolo, who returned with Kuririn to their normal state, to escape. Vegeta self-destructs in an attempt to kill Boo, but he manages to regenerate. Bobbidi and Boo start looking for Piccolo, Goten and Trunks by killing citizens. Goku returns to Kami-sama's place, where he decides to teach Goten and Trunks a technique to fuse their bodies and defeat Boo. Meanwhile, Gohan is taken by Kaiō-shin and Kibito, who was revived by Shenlong, to their planet to train with the legendary Zeta Sword.
To avoid the Dragon Radar's destruction, Goku confronts Boo to give Trunks time to find it. When Goku escapes, Boo kills Bobbidi after tiring of being ordered around. Goku teaches Goten and Trunks the fusion dance, but he is forced to return to the afterlife, where he meets up with Gohan. Wanting to test the Z Sword, Goku accidentally breaks it, awakening an ancient Kaiō-shin who starts performing a 24-hour ritual to make Gohan stronger. Goten and Trunks succeed in performing the fusion dance and form a warrior called Gotenks (ゴテンクス, Gotenkusu), who still needs to train to defeat Boo. Mr. Satan goes to confront Boo, but instead becomes his friend and makes Boo swear that he will never kill people again. However, Boo's dog is shot by a bandit, causing him to create a thin Boo made up of his evil feelings that turns the obese one into chocolate. The thin Boo then eats the chocolate and transforms into a new, stronger Boo.
The new Boo finds Kami-sama's palace and faces Gotenks in the Room of Spirit and Time. Gotenks starts performing weak techniques to make the battle dramatic, causing Piccolo to destroy the Room's door. Boo creates a hole in the dimension and returns to Kami-sama's where he turns everyone into chocolate before murdering them. Gotenks manages to escape alongside Piccolo, and continues facing Boo. He is then able to overpower Boo, but before he can defeat him, the fusion ends. Gohan returns, and fights against Boo. Gohan is able to overwhelm Boo, who self-destructs himself and regenerates later. Gotenks tries to face Boo again, but he is absorbed along with Piccolo. Having absorbed Gotenks, Boo is now able to surpass Gohan. The old Kaiō-shin gives his remaining life energy to Goku, along with two earrings that will allow him to fuse with Gohan. Goku attempts to give an earring to Gohan, but Gohan is absorbed by Boo before he and Goku can fuse.
Goku fuses with Vegeta, who has been allowed to return to Earth. They form a powerful warrior named Vegerott (ベジット, Bejitto) who easily defeats Boo, but allows Boo to absorb him so that he can free Gohan and the others. As he enters Boo's body, Vegerott suddenly defuses. Goku and Vegeta find and free Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo. As they also free the obese Boo, the current Boo undergoes a new transformation that turns him into a child-like Boo.
The new Boo proceeds to destroy the Earth, killing Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo. However, Goku and Vegeta are able to escape to Kaiō-shin's planet along with Dende and Mr. Satan. Goku prepares to face the new Boo, who regenerates and teleports to the Kaiō-shin planet. However, Goku is unable to control his powers, and Vegeta and the obese Boo distract the current Boo to buy Goku time to recover. Vegeta tells Dende to use Porunga to restore the Earth and revive all of its inhabitants, which will allow Goku to absorb their energies to perform the Super Genki-Dama. With help from the obese Boo and Mr. Satan, Goku is able to prepare the Super Genki-Dama and uses it to kill Boo once and for all. Goku then returns to live with his family and friends and 10 years later, he enters himself into the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai. There, he confronts Boo's reincarnation, a young boy named Oob. Goku, impressed by Oob's power, decides to train him so that he will one day become Goku's replacement as the protector of Earth.

A 14-year-old narcissistic, street-fighting slacker Yusuke Urameshi dies an unlikely hero, after he is hit by a car after saving a young child who was playing with a ball in the street. He soon learns that the child would have lived anyway, and that the Spirit World was not expecting him to die. For this reason, he is then offered the chance to be revived by the mysterious Botan, Guardian of the river Styx. At first, Yusuke initially refuses the proposal, but ultimately accepts after seeing the people he thought did not care for him, including his childhood friend Keiko Yukimura, his mother Atsuko, and his rival Kazuma Kuwabara grieving for him at his wake. Yusuke meets Koenma, son of the ruler of the Spirit World, and is given the task of raising a spirit egg that, when hatched, may return him to his body. Yusuke appears to Keiko in a dream to tell her that he will soon be revived. He later possesses the body of Kuwabara for one hour to find Keiko to inform Atsuko not to have his body
Yusuke discovers that Kuwabara has been forced by a cruel and corrupt teacher into a policy of strict nonviolence for a week, having the risk of one of his own friends losing his after-school job and being unable to support his family. The teacher, witnessing Kuwabara's determination to keep his promise (going so far as not to offer resistance whenever he is harassed by punks), then puts an additional stipulation that Kuwabara must score 50% or higher on the upcoming physical science exam. Yusuke later helps him study by communicating to him in his dreams. Kuwabara becomes furious after the teacher attempts to alter his passing grade, yet Yusuke is able to prevent his violence. The teacher is forced to change the paper back under the orders of the tough-but-fair Principal Takenaka, and Kuwabara's friend keeps his job, with Kuwabara thanking Yusuke.
Koenma reveals to Yusuke that he is a spirit detective, and must use his own unique abilities to battle demons and other threats to the Living World. Koenma additionally gives Yusuke a mission to recover three artifacts stolen by master thieves of the Spirit World. Yusuke first encounters Gouki, the first thief who possesses the Orb of Baast: an artifact that enables the user to steal human souls, especially those of children. Gouki proves to be much stronger than Yusuke, threatening to eat him alive.
Yusuke enters a fighting tournament at Koenma's behest. The winner of the tournament gets to learn the secret techniques of Genkai, a master psychic, and Koenma knows that there is a demon named Rando after Genkai's techniques. To his surprise, Yusuke finds his old rival Kuwabara at the tournament, seeking to learn more about his powers. Yusuke and Kuwabara inadvertently qualify for Genkai's tournament due to their high amount of spirit energy. After a series of arcade games testing the awareness, strength, and growth of spirit energy, only twenty finalists are left. As the next challenge is to travel through a forest onto the other side, Yusuke comes across and triumphs over a vampire bat-like demon named Baldok the Bat Tamer.
Kuwabara faces Shorin, who reveals more that his initial demeanor entails. Using techniques of spirit mediums and masters of centuries past, Shorin is identified to be Rando by Genkai. Rando shrinks Kuwabara in size, proving to be much too powerful for him, as Rando literally almost crushes Kuwabara to death before returning him to normal size. The final battle between Yusuke and Rando ensues. Yusuke is able to break through one of Rando's destructive attacks, seemingly defeating him. However, Yusuke learns that Rando is far from defeated and that the real battle will soon begin.
Yusuke returns from training with Genkai to discover that his home city has been invaded by Makai insects inhabiting humans controlled by the Makai Whistle used by the four Saint Beasts. Yusuke and Kuwabara enter a hidden portal which takes them to the location of the Saint Beasts' castle. Kurama and Hiei, with the offer of pardons from their past crimes, have been sent to help Yusuke and Kuwabara with this new mission. Once inside, the four are faced with holding up a collapsed ceiling, trying not to betray one another in order to escape.
Botan figures out that the Makai insects can inhabit depressed adults and children. Kuwabara demands to fight the next opponent himself, and encounters Byakko, the second Saint Beast. Byakko summons beasts from within his mane to attack Kuwabara. Nonetheless, Kuwabara uses his spirit sword to stab through each and every beast. With Byakko's ability to absorb spirit energy, Kuwabara's attacks prove fruitless. Determined to win, Kuwabara devises a plan to defeat Byakko.
As the four travel deeper within the castle, Seiryu, the third Saint Beast, appears. When Byakko weakly arrives and asks for Seiryu's help in fighting against the quartet, Seiryu freezes and shatters him to death after declaring him a failure and a disgrace to the Four Saint Beasts. Hiei chooses to battle Seiryu afterward. Although Seiryu seems to have the advantage, Hiei reveals that he has been merely toying with him, and easily reverses all of his ice attacks. As Seriyu attempts to respond, Hiei cuts him down with his sword. Meanwhile, the leader of the Saint Beasts learns about Yusuke's relationship with Keiko and decides to target her with the Makai-infested civilians in an attempt to weaken Yusuke's determination to stop him from carrying out his plan.
Yusuke tried to snatch the Makai Whistle from Suzaku, but to no avail. Suzaku then reveals his secret technique, which is the ability to split himself into seven entities. Yusuke becomes overwhelmed by the massive attacks Suzaku unleashes. Meanwhile, Botan and Keiko must avoid harm from the Makai-infested civilians. Also, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei are still occupied with the cultivated humans, even when entering the watchtower. Yusuke is reminded of his training under critical condition from Genkai, committing himself to fight even approaching death.
Hiei gives Yusuke a cassette, sent from Koenma, that will describe his next case. Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan are recruited to rescue the ice maiden, Yukina, from the greedy and cruel human crime lord, Gonzo Tarukane, deep within the mountains. Tarukane forces Yukina to cry in order to secrete jewels from the tears of her eyes, which are considered to be highly rare and valuable. It is revealed that Yukina is actually Hiei's sister, in which Hiei plans to kill Tarukane if he arrives before the others.
Yusuke Urameshi unexpectedly crosses paths with the Younger Toguro on a street intersection, who shows Yusuke a demonstration of his true strength in a parking garage. Yusuke is given an ultimatum, in that he must participate in the Dark Tournament two months ahead, organized by human crime lords and drawn in by fierce apparitions, or have him and his friends killed. Left no choice and feeling helpless, Yusuke and his allies begin a two-month training period. Soon after, Yusuke, along with Kazuma Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, and a mysterious masked fighter, band together a board a ship leading to the Dark Tournament grounds.
Team Urameshi finds out that the preliminary competition is on the ship itself. While Yusuke sleeps due to exhaustion from training, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, and the masked fighter quickly dispose of the attacking competitors, qualifying for the next level of the tournament in the process. Upon arriving at the hotel, the five are briefly visited by Rinku and Zeru, two members of Team Rokuyukai.
Yusuke is annoyed by Chu's unpredictable movements, as he is constantly being pummeled to the ground. Yusuke shows his ability to use his spirit gun on each of his fingers on his right hand. Chu then unleashes his special attack, resembling much of the power of the spirit gun. They are evenly matched as both have exhausted all of their spirit energies.
The masked fighter saves Yusuke and Kuwabara from direct attacks by Team Ichigaki, later revealed to be a young woman with pink hair, yet her name is still unknown. Kurama and Hiei defeat Gatasval, mentioning how Dr. Ichigaki took command of Yen, Ryu, and Kai using the blood-saver node as his invention. The three shed tears of blood after Kuwabara uses himself as a human shield to bear the combined attack of the three. Yusuke takes them all on and is able to sense and counter their attacks.
Kuwabara is unable to fight due to the attack by Team Ichigaki. Luka, the nurse of the Dark Tournament, is summoned to hold custody of Hiei and the masked fighter, creating a barrier around them, and rendering them unable to escape due to their depleted spirit energy. Kurama is to face off against Gama, who uses paint to immobilize his opponent. Kurama unexpectedly uses his rose whip with his hair to severely wound Gama, gradually bleeding to death.
The Finals of the Dark Tournament begin! Kurama must regain his original demon form to hope to beat Karasu. Hiei shows off the results of his training to master the Black Dragon.
The finals of the Dark Tournament continue after Hiei's destruction of the first arena. Kuwabara shows the results of his training and uncovers a secret. Yusuke, now armed with his master's Spirit Orb, begins his fated match with Toguro.
Kuwabara's sacrifice pushes Yusuke to unleash his still latent power. Toguro gets what he wanted. Sakyo has one final trick.
Months after becoming victor of the Dark Tournament, Yusuke is itching for a new challenge. When he decides to take on the challenge of 3 humans, he may have bitten off more than he can chew. Could it be related to the strange energy readings in the Human World?
Yusuke and the gang seek more information about Sensui's plans
Sensui pursues the one who can destroy the Kekkai Barrier. Kuwabara is still unable to use his Spirit Energy when he and his friends are attacked by Seaman
Sensui himself has come to abduct Kuwabara. Yusuke is in hot pursuit when he's attacked by Sniper
The siege of Sensui's hideout begins! The first obstacle is the domain of Game Master. Kurama's resolve is put to the test.

After the death of Yusuke, his grief stricken friends are given the push they need to reach new heights of power. Kuwabara uses his Jigen-To to slice the Kekkai Barrier and the battle with Sensui reaches it's conclusion in Demon World. Meanwhile, King Enma sends out his elite guards reserved solely for world-ending threats. Are they really going to be able to solve this crisis?

The End of Yu Yu Hakusho
The series begins when Squee wakes in the middle of the night to find Johnny in the bathroom of his family's new house. After a confrontation with Squee's teddy bear, Shmee, Johnny leaves, informing Squee that they are neighbors. Later, a survey-taker tries to collect Johnny's opinion on a recent rash of murders around the city. When the man asks about a possible case of vampirism, Johnny explains that he has to keep a wall in his house wet with the blood of his victims or else a monster imprisoned there will break free, then pushes the surveyor forcefully through a boarded window, scaring Squee in the process. Johnny goes on a rampage with a spork in a "Taco Hell" restaurant, incited by an elderly patron referring to him as 'wacky'. Following the slaughter, Johnny watches its coverage on the news. Johnny debates Psychodoughboy and Nail Bunny on whether or not he should commit suicide, but the group gets distracted by a commercial for diarrhea medicine.
Johnny captures a man named Edgar Vargas, who he recognizes as an innocent and apologizes to for needing his blood. Vargas explains that, because of his faith, he is not afraid of death, and Johnny kills him, but lacks his usual sense of satisfaction. Johnny captures a beautiful woman and tells her that he will spare her because he is better than her, but then kills her with a scythe anyway when he realizes that they are both just as ugly on the inside. Johnny goes on a date with Devi, a cashier at a local bookstore; torn between his infatuation and his need to satiate his deeper psychotic urges, he attempts to stab her, but Devi escapes after nearly killing Johnny. Later in the issue, Johnny makes a late-night run to a "24/7" convenience store for a "Cherry Brain Freezy" and after the store clerk tells him he can't because they shut off at 2:00 a.m (in the story, this particular part takes place at 2:15 a.m, as it says in a little caption) he then proceeded to kill the man, and is unable to kill himself after using the one bullet in the gun.
Johnny takes a leisurely walk while listening to "Ode to Joy" on his portable CD player until a man outside of Café le Prick insults him after Johnny informs him that he does not smoke. Johnny then kills everyone in the café, including the man from the "Meanwhile..." strip that introduced Devi, while announcing each victim's crime against him and/or society in general. The sequence ends with Johnny warning the remaining patrons to 'think quickly, for a long life is never a guarantee' seconds before Café le Prick is destroyed by an explosion. A man tries to molest Squee after the boy becomes separated from his neglectful mother in the mall, but Johnny intervenes and kills the pedophile while explaining people's baser natures to the horrified Squee. Johnny tortures a drunken bully named Krik with an electric drill. Johnny abducts a goth couple, Dillon and Tess, after Dillon ruins a screening of Kafka for him. Johnny realizes that he cannot die or be brought to justice for his murders, and that the doughboys are no longer under his control. Johnny force-feeds a victim to test the freshness of the contents of his fridge, then releases the bewildered man.
Johnny and Nailbunny journey through the bowels of Johnny's house and discuss the nature of Johnny's psychosis. It is during this discussion that we learn a bit more about Johnny's past and his relationship with Nailbunny. Later, Johnny and Tess have a conversation in the dungeon as Johnny prepares to torture Dillon with electricity. Johnny kills a cockroach named Mr. Samsa after Gregor Samsa, the main character of Franz Kafka's short story, The Metamorphosis. Devi has been in seclusion since Johnny's attempt on her life in issue #2. Her friend Tonja (later renamed Tenna) convinces Devi to call Johnny, who has rigged up a tape recording of his apology/explanation for the attempt on Devi's life, and his assurance that he will not bother her again. Ironically, the call triggers an automated gun that shoots Johnny in the face.
Krik manages to free Tess before a monster breaks free from the wall and kills Dillon. Krik tells Tess how he ended up in Johnny's clutches. The monster runs amok in a room full of restrained victims. Tess and Krik run into the doughboys. Mr. Eff is angry about Johnny's accidental shooting while Psychodoughboy is overjoyed. The monster catches up and consumes the doughboys as Tess and Krik flee upstairs to find Johnny clinging to life. Krik stomps Johnny's skull until the wall monster breaks through the floor. Krik run for the front door, but, as he crosses the threshold, one of the monster's tentacles cuts him in half, and he falls with the monster screaming into oblivion. Tess looks into the void and fades from existence. All that is left of the world is Johnny's corpse floating through space on a section of floorboards.
When Johnny's soul arrives in Heaven, he meets St. Peter and God. Johnny is thoroughly dissatisfied with the way God has been running the universe and tells him so. A woman named Damned Elise gives Johnny a tour of heaven. Johnny starts a massive psychic battle when he discovers that the souls in Heaven have mental powers which includes the ability to explode people's heads. In Hell, Johnny meets Señor Diablo, who reveals that Johnny is a "flusher" or "waste lock", a creature chosen to concentrate the spiritual byproducts generated by humans into a specific object or point in space, in this case the wall in Johnny's house. As Johnny died, the wall unleashed the built-up negative energy, in the process destroying the universe, which was then restored. Johnny then finds out that Hell's torments are entirely self-inflicted by the trivialities with which people obsessed over in life--everything from commuting to cream cheese to lint. Johnny is resurrected and finds himself in his house, but with all of his voices gone, replaced by a talking "Bub's Burger boy" named Reverend Meat.[16] Johnny is left unsure if he really died or if he experienced some kind of dream or hallucination. Later, Johnny stands in line at a 24/7 to buy a "Frooty Pop" when a robber bursts in and shoots the clerk.
Johnny resolves to become emotionless like an insect. A copycat killer named Jimmy pays Johnny a visit and confesses to several murders, including one rape incident mentioned earlier to Johnny by both a surveyor and Tess, which enrages Johnny so much that he eviscerates Jimmy with hooks and crushes his face with a sledgehammer. Afterwards, Johnny tries to phone Devi with a prerecorded message, but she delivers a diatribe against him. Johnny then argues with Reverend Meat, who urges him to give in to his emotions, though the disembodied voice of Nailbunny tells Johnny to resist. Johnny kills a beggar requesting money for beer by shooting an arrow into his back with a "kick me" sign attached. Johnny then pays one last visit to his friend Squee, before his departure, and tells the boy that he will soon leave for a vacation, then smashes the back of Squee's father's head with a toy robot. Johnny then (for once) cuts the crap, and tells the boy that he just wants to make sure that he watches out for himself, stating that he his father is just one of his worries. Johnny then gives his young little friend some surprising words of wisdom, telling him that it's easy to be affected by his own fears and hatred, but he does not want them warp his mind and damage him permanently, and just hope that he manages as he grows up. The series ends with Johnny sitting on a cliff overlooking the city, writing in his diary.

Forever set, a precious moon is lost. The others mourn him with ceremony grand.
For the first twelve years of his life, Naruto Uzumaki had to live a life without parents and endure the apparent unsolicited hate from the villagers of Konohagakure, never knowing what it was like to be loved or have friends as a result. One day, however, he learns from the covert ninja Mizuki that the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox was sealed within him soon after his birth and is the reason he is alone in the world. After this, Naruto's fortunes begin to change. In addition to finding a father-figure in Iruka Umino after defeating Mizuki, Naruto achieves his dream by finally becoming a ninja, his ultimate desire being to become the greatest in Konoha, the Hokage. In doing so, Naruto is added to Team 7 along with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno under the leadership of Kakashi Hatake. To see whether or not the three are ready to become ninja, Kakashi administers a test to see if they have what it takes. Each fails independently, leading Kakashi to believe they will never become ninja.
Kakashi advises the three to start focusing on the team's well-being instead of their own, and in doing so they are able to pass the test. As one of the team's first missions, they are assigned to escort a man named Tazuna to the Land of Waves. Along the way, the group is attacked by Zabuza Momochi, an assassin sent to kill Tazuna. Kakashi, with the help of Naruto, Sasuke, and his own Sharingan (写輪眼, lit. "Copy Wheel Eye", English manga: "Mirror Wheel Eye") eye, is able to defeat Zabuza. Before he can finish Zabuza off, however, a masked boy named Haku arrives to take him away. In preparation for another of Zabuza's attacks, Kakashi decides to train Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.
In an effort to get stronger, Naruto trains harder than Sasuke and Sakura. Though he catches up to both in terms of talent, exerting the extra effort leaves him fatigued. To allow him a chance to regain his energy, the rest of Team 7 goes on to escort Tazuna without him. Soon afterwards, however, they are attacked again by Zabuza and a masked Haku. Using his new training, Sasuke does battle with Haku and proves to be an equal match, forcing Haku to trap him in a prison of ice. Naruto quickly arrives to help and joins Sasuke in the fight, though both are soon overpowered. As Haku makes to finish Naruto off, Sasuke uses himself as a shield to block the attack and appears to be killed. Naruto, in his anger, taps into the dormant powers of the demon fox sealed within him.
With the demon fox's power Naruto is easily able to defeat Haku. When Haku's mask breaks away, however, Naruto is unable to bring himself to kill the young boy beneath the mask. Elsewhere, Kakashi and Zabuza do battle. As Kakashi is about to kill Zabuza with his Lightning Blade, Haku takes the attack, saving Zabuza at the cost of his own life. Despite this turn of events Kakashi is still able to disable Zabuza, prompting the arrival of Zabuza's employer, Gato. When Gato orders his own personal army of thugs to kill Zabuza along with Tazuna and Team 7, Zabuza uses the last of his strength to kill Gato, avenging Haku's death before dying himself. With their mission complete, Team 7 and a revived Sasuke return to Konoha. Soon after returning home, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are entered into the Chunin Exams, a chance for them to rise up the ninja ranks and test their abilities.
Prior to the start of the exam, Team 7 has a chance to mingle with their former classmates and fellow rookie ninja: the members of Team 8 and Team 10. Once the first phase of the exam begins, it is revealed that all of those wishing to advance in rank must first complete a written test. The test's questions, however, prove too difficult for almost all present, and it soon becomes apparent that the true objective of the first phase is to cheat without getting caught. Unaware that this is the test's true purpose, Naruto insists on continuing. Through his willingness to face the unknown, he is allowed to continue on to the second phase with the rest of the examinees who were not caught.
For the second phase of the exams, the remaining teams of three must survive the Forest of Death and arrive at its center in five days' time. Soon after they enter the forest Team 7 is attacked by Orochimaru. Naruto engages him in battle, though is quickly defeated. Sasuke, inspired by Naruto's determination, continues the battle in Naruto's place. Before escaping, Orochimaru brands Sasuke with a cursed seal, knocking him out. Sakura, the only conscious member of the team, is forced to look after her teammates and defend them from the attacks of Orochimaru's followers. As she is about to be defeated, Team 10 arrives to help, allowing Sakura to return to attending to Naruto and Sasuke as the others deal with her attackers.
Team 10 and Orochimaru's forces do battle, though their progress is slow in either side claiming victory. Just as additional reinforcements begin to arrive to help Team 10, Sasuke finally awakens, the cursed seal given to him by Orochimaru fueling him with power. With his new strength Sasuke is able to make quick work of their opponents, forcing them to flee. Although the battle is won, Team 7 needs three days to recover. As they make way for the forest's center on the final day they are briefly impeded by a group of stragglers, though ultimately claim victory and complete the second phase.
Seven teams of three pass the second phase, far too many aspiring ninja to advance to the final rounds. To reduce the number of participants ten preliminary matches are held, with the winner of each match advancing to the finals. After the first few matches, where Sasuke is able to claim victory, Sakura is pit against her rival and childhood friend Ino Yamanaka. While neither is fond of fighting the other, both do their best to be worthy opponents. Although Sakura is able to avoid Ino's attacks for much of the match's duration, Ino is eventually able to restrain her. Using one of her family's signature abilities Ino takes control of Sakura's mind, intending to force Sakura to forfeit the match.
Before she can be forced to surrender, Sakura is able to expel Ino from her mind. With both tired out from the ordeal, the match culminates in a double knock out, after which the two begin to rekindle their friendship. Naruto proves more fortunate in his own match, outsmarting his opponent, Team 8 member Kiba Inuzaka, to the surprise of the onlookers. Naruto's success motivates Kiba's teammate Hinata Hyuga to do her best in the match against her cousin, Neji Hyuga. Neji, a stronger fighter who hates Hinata's family and is fatalistic, shows her no mercy during their fight. The match concludes with Hinata being left in critical condition and Neji showing no remorse for his treatment of one of his relatives. Naruto, enraged by Neji's actions and outlook, swears upon Hinata's spilled blood that he will defeat Neji in the final matches.
As one of the last matches, Rock Lee is pit against Gaara. With his superior speed and strength Lee attempts to claim a quick victory, but is unable to fully bypass Gaara's superior defenses. After being left tired out from relentless assault, Lee is left unable to move and is left at Gaara's mercy. After his body is broken by Gaara's attacks and Gaara makes to finish him off, Gaara is declared the victor to prevent further damage to Lee. The preliminaries draw to a close and the finalists are assigned opponents for the finals in a month's time, leaving them plenty of time to recuperate and train. Naruto, eager to get ready for his match against Neji Hyuga, approaches Kakashi to help him train. Kakashi, having already decided to train Sasuke, encourages Naruto to find an alternative, which he does in the form of Jiraiya.
Soon after Jiraiya starts to train Naruto, he realizes that Naruto is the container of the demon fox. Rather than give him the usual training regiment of preserving his strength, Jiraiya trains him to take advantage of the fox's power. Meanwhile, rumors of an impending invasion of Konoha by the villages of Otogakure and Sunagakure begin to spread, causing the Konoha ninja to begin preparing for the worst. For Naruto, his training consists of being taught how to summon toads to his side during battle. Although he struggles to get the hang of it at first, he is eventually able to take full advantage of the demon fox and summon a toad. Naruto recovers from his training and, on the day of the finals, heads to the location of the final matches.
In the first match of the finals, Naruto gets to fight Neji Hyuga. With Neji being more naturally skilled than he is, Naruto is forced to call upon the dormant powers of the demon fox to get an even footing. The two ultimately clash, and after the smoke clears Neji appears to be the victor. Before he can be declared the winner, however, Naruto manages a successful sneak attack, which knocks Neji out and lets Naruto claim victory. For the next match, Shikamaru Nara fights Temari. Shikamaru uses his shadow to try to trap her, and although Temari tries to stay out of his shadow's range he is able to catch her. Though poised to win his match, Shikamaru forfeits instead due to the amount of energy wasted in trying to catch Temari.
Sasuke begins his match with Gaara by trying, like Rock Lee, to bypass his defenses. When he too proves unsuccessful, he readies an attack taught to him by Kakashi: Chidori (千鳥, lit. "One Thousand Birds"). Just as he use it to break through Gaara's defenses, the invasion of Konoha starts, ending the finals. Orochimaru, the mastermind behind the invasion, takes the Third Hokage, Konoha's leader, hostage and the two begin to fight. As invading forces pour into Konoha, Sasuke pursues a fleeing Gaara. Not wanting Sasuke to get too far away, but not able to follow him personally, Kakashi sends Sakura, Naruto, and Shikamaru to stop him.
Orochimaru, a former student of the Third Hokage that is eager to kill his old master, resurrects the First and Second Hokage, the Third's former teachers, to fight him. Needing to get rid of the two if he is to defeat Orochimaru, the Third seals away their souls. The Third attempts to seal Orochimaru's soul as well, but is stabbed in the back before he can complete the sealing. Elsewhere, Naruto, Sakura, and Shikamaru discover that they are being followed by some of Konoha's invaders, and Shikamaru opts to stay behind to stall them. Using the strength left over from his fight with Temari he buys them the necessary time.
Sasuke catches up with Gaara, just in time to witness the beginnings of Gaara's transformation. As he begins to assume a monstrous form, Gaara is given enough speed and strength to overcome Sasuke's Chidori. As Gaara is about to finish him off, Naruto arrives to fight save him and fight in his place. After Naruto taps into the power of the demon fox sealed within him, Gaara completes his transformation becoming a life-size replica of Shukaku, the beast sealed within him. To compete with this giant form, Naruto summons the biggest toad he can muster. The toad clashes with Shukaku and Naruto, hoping to end the battle quickly, tries to bring Gaara to his senses.
Naruto headbutts Gaara, causing the Shukaku form to recede. The two have one final exchange of blows and Naruto is able to claim victory while also redeeming Gaara. Meanwhile, the Third Hokage realizes that he lacks the strength needed to fully seal Orochimaru's soul. Doing what little he can he seals Orochimaru's arms instead, ending the invasion at the cost of his life. Orochimaru and the invaders flee, and Konoha begins to rebuild. Jiraiya, with Naruto's assistance, sets out to find a new Hokage, hoping that his old teammate, Tsunade, will take the job. As they leave, Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki infiltrate Konoha and are engaged in battle by Konoha's elite ninja. The two prove too much for Konoha's forces, and even Kakashi is left beaten after fighting the two. Before they leave Kakashi is able to learn that they are members of Akatsuki who seek to capture Naruto for the demon fox sealed within him. Sasuke learns of this and, having a prior desire to kill his brother, Itachi, races out to find Naruto before they do.
Once finding Naruto, Itachi and Kisame try to take him with them. Before they can do so, however, Sasuke arrives, ready to kill Itachi for murdering their family years earlier. Despite Sasuke's efforts, Itachi is more than capable of dealing with him, and it is not until the arrival of Jiraiya that they are driven off. Sasuke is sent back to Konoha to recover, and Naruto and Jiraiya continue their search. As they travel from town to town trying to locate Tsunade, Jiraiya begins teaching Naruto how to use the Rasengan (螺旋丸, lit. spiral sphere, English manga: "Spiral Chakra Sphere"). As Naruto slowly progresses through the learning stages, Orochimaru, in need of a way to heal his arms if he is to attack Konoha again, also sets out to find Tsunade, her medical expertise being the only thing that can help him.
Orochimaru tracks down Tsunade and makes her an offer: heal his arms and in exchange he will revive her dead brother and lover. He gives her a week to consider it and leaves. Soon afterwards Jiraiya and Naruto find her and offer her the title of Hokage. She turns down the offer, instead choosing to insult the former Hokage. Naruto, enraged, attacks her with an incomplete Rasengan. Intrigued by his progress, Tsunade makes a bet with him: that he cannot perfect the Rasengan in a week. Naruto, determined to prove her wrong, accepts and dedicates his time to completing the attack. Once the week is up and he appears to have been unsuccessful, Tsunade, disappointed in his progress, goes to meet Orochimaru.
Tsunade meets with Orochimaru, though rather than heal him she tries to kill him. Unwilling to see her loved ones if it would mean the destruction of Konoha, Tsunade is drawn into battle with Orochimaru's assistant, Kabuto Yakushi. Kabuto is eventually able to immobilize her, forcing the newly arrived Jiraiya and Naruto to defend her; Jiraiya battling Orochimaru and Naruto fighting Kabuto. Although Kabuto appears in control of the battle, Naruto is able to deliver a perfected Rasengan to his stomach in an attempt to protect Tsunade. Inspired by Naruto's winning of their bet, Tsunade overcomes her restraints and joins Jiraiya in attacking Orochimaru. Unable to do combat with both of them, Orochimaru escapes with Kabuto. Once Naruto recovers, Tsunade decides to accept the title of Hokage, and returns with him and Jiraiya to Konoha.
Upon returning, Tsunade tends to a number of injuries that have yet to be fully healed. Rock Lee, his injuries from his fight with Gaara too severe to be healed by regular medics, proves her most difficult case. After inspecting the damage to his body Tsunade advises that he give up his life as a ninja, though Lee insists taking the operation. Meanwhile, Sasuke, angry with himself for being so easily defeated by Itachi, begins to search earnestly for any means to get stronger. In doing so he forces Naruto to fight him, though his spirits are only dampened further when Naruto's Rasengan proves stronger than his Chidori. To draw Sasuke further down the path of vengeance, Orochimaru sends his Sound Four to confront Sasuke and show him the strength that can be gained by joining them.
Sasuke decides to go to Orochimaru in order to get stronger and accompanies the Sound Four back to his lair after coldly rejecting Sakura, who tried to bring him back. Upon learning of Sasuke's defection, Naruto accompanies Shikamaru in assembling a team to retrieve him, and the two gather Neji, Kiba, and Choji Akimichi to their cause. The team pursues the Sound Four until they are trapped by Sound Four member Jirobo, who distracts them while the rest of the Sound Four goes on ahead. Choji is able to free the team from Jirobo, and begins to do battle with him while the others continue their pursuit. Choji and Jirobo have a battle of strengths, with Choji eventually beating Jirobo to death.
Once the retrieval team catches up with the Sound Four, Kidomaru uses his web to trap them. Neji frees the team from the bindings and sends the others after the remaining Sound Four members. Kidomaru attacks Neji from afar, slowly studying his actions to devise a way to defeat him. Using the silk he produces to create a bow and arrow, Kidomaru begins firing shots at a blindspot in Neji's defenses, eventually succeeding in hitting his target. Neji, however, is able to survive the attack, and uses the arrow that pierced him to kill Kidomaru. Elsewhere, Orochimaru earnestly awaits Sasuke's arrival, planning to take Sasuke's body for himself to regain the use of his arms. Although he puts it off for as long as he can, Orochimaru is forced to take a different body, planning to instead take Sasuke's body at a later date.
After the remaining portion of the retrieval team catches up with the Sound Four again, Naruto, Shikamaru, and Kiba split up to fight the remaining Sound Four members individually. Kiba battles with Sakon and Ukon while Shikamaru fights Tayuya. The Sound Four members overwhelm the Konoha ninja, and they are left on the verge of defeat. Meanwhile, Kimimaro, a former member of the Sound Four sent to continue the task of bringing Sasuke to Orochimaru, is forced to fight Naruto. Despite Naruto's best efforts, Kimimaro is able to buy enough time for Sasuke to continue on his own.
Determined to go after Sasuke, Naruto contemplates how to defeat Kimimaro. Rock Lee, having recovered from his surgery, soon arrives to fight Kimimaro in his place, allowing Naruto to continue on. Despite briefly gaining the upper hand, Lee, like Kiba and Shikamaru, is forced onto the defensive, and it is not until the arrival of Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro that they are all saved. Temari crushes Tayuya under a pile of debris and Kankuro kills Sakon and Ukon with a barrage of weapons. Gaara proves to have a more difficult fight, as Kimimaro is continually able to recover from his attacks. As Kimimaro is about to kill Gaara and Lee via a sneak attack, he dies of the illness that forced him to leave the Sound Four. Their battles won, the Konoha ninja return home with their saviors, just as Naruto catches up with Sasuke and the Valley of the End, a landmark where the First Hokage similarly fought Sasuke's ancestor Madara.
Naruto tries to reason with Sasuke, though Sasuke is uninterested in returning to Konoha. As the two start to fight Sasuke remembers why he became so determined to gain power and kill Itachi. Sasuke spent his childhood trying to win his family's recognition, though their interest was always focused on Itachi and his prodigious skills. Just when Itachi began to distance himself from the clan and Sasuke started to enjoy his family's attention, he returned home one day to find that Itachi had killed their entire family. Deciding to spare Sasuke, Itachi gave him words of advice: in order to become strong enough to kill him and avenge the clan, Sasuke need only strive for power. To help Sasuke down this path, Itachi told Sasuke how to gain the Uchiha clan's most powerful ability, the Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyō Sharingan, lit. "Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye"): simply kill your closest friend. Having since come to find Naruto to be his closest friend, Sasuke prepares do just that, finding the loss of Naruto to be an adequate payment for the strength needed to kill Itachi.
Naruto and Sasuke prove equally matched. In attempts to gain victory, each calls upon their unique strengths: Naruto and the demon fox's power, Sasuke and his cursed seal's reserves. Naruto and Sasuke fuel their sources of strength into their Rasengan and Chidori, respectively, and attack one another. Once the energy created by the clash dissipates, Sasuke stands over a defeated Naruto, though his injuries leave him little better off. Although he contemplates killing Naruto he eventually decides against it, realizing that that is what Itachi would want. Deciding to get power in his own way, Sasuke goes to Orochimaru, ready for whatever is necessary to get stronger. Kakashi arrives to retrieve Naruto and take him back to Konoha, where he, like the rest of the retrieval team, are healed.
After two-and-a-half years of training abroad, Naruto Uzumaki returns to his hometown of Konohagakure. Coinciding with his return, the criminal organization Akatsuki becomes more active in its quest to capture all of the tailed beasts. For this task, Akatsuki members Sasori and Deidara capture Gaara of Sunagakure. They succeed in their task and flee the village with Gaara. Upon hearing of this, Naruto is reunited with Sakura Haruno and their mentor Kakashi Hatake, their group renamed Team Kakashi, on a mission to save Gaara.
During a brief pitstop in Sunagakure, Team Kakashi is joined by Chiyo, Sasori's grandmother. The group follows the Akatsuki members' trail from Sunagakure while Konoha sends Team Guy for assistance. Deciding to stall the two groups long enough for them to extract Shukaku the One-Tail from Gaara's body, doppelgängers of Akatsuki members Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki are sent to distract them, and succeed in buying the needed time. The Hidden Leaf Ninja eventually converge outside the Akatsuki hideout just as the extraction of Shukaku reaches completion.
In order for Team Kakashi to gain entry to the Akatsuki's lair, Team Guy is forced to split up in order to take down a barrier over the entrance. Though they accomplish this task, the members of Team Guy are forced to deal with a number of booby traps left for them. As for Team Kakashi, they find Sasori and Deidara along with Gaara's lifeless body. Deidara flies off with Gaara's body, leading Naruto and Kakashi away as Sakura and Chiyo deal with Sasori and his various puppets. Sakura's immense strength and Chiyo's own skills with puppetry, however, are more than capable of dealing with Sasori's puppets.
Backed into a corner, Sasori resorts to his Performance of a Hundred Puppets to overwhelm Sakura and Chiyo. But when Sakura blocks an attack meant for her, Chiyo manages to pierce Sasori through the heart before healing Sakura's injuries. As a reward to Sakura for surviving, Sasori tells her in his dying breath of the spy he has within Orochimaru's ranks that he was supposed to meet. Elsewhere, Naruto and Kakashi succeed in retrieving Gaara's body from Deidara, who escapes them by faking his death. After they regroup with Chiyo, Sakura, and Team Guy, Sakura tries to revive Gaara, though Shukaku's extraction has resulted in his death. As Naruto mourns for Gaara, Chiyo begins transferring her life energy to Gaara's body, restoring him to life at the cost of her own. The group honors Chiyo's memory and then returns home. But later, Sasori's ring is found by Zetsu's subordinate Tobi who wants to join the Akatsuki.
Though Kakashi is left bedridden upon his return to Konoha from his battle with Deidara, he makes plans for Naruto and Sakura to meet with Sasori's spy in the hopes that they will be able to retrieve the final member of the original Team 7: Sasuke Uchiha. Danzo Shimura of Konoha's council, fearing the Akatsuki might try to capture Naruto for the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him, assigns Sai to join Team Kakashi with Tsunade responding to it by assigning Yamato as the group's temporary leader. But Yamato has trouble with Naruto's refusal to get along with the emotionally dead Sai. Eventually arriving to their destination, Yamato goes to meet the spy alone with the rest of Team Kakashi remain in the shadows as backup. But as Yamato begins to question the spy, Kabuto Yakushi, about Orochimaru's base of operations, Orochimaru himself shows up to end their discussion.
Kabuto, having always been loyal to Orochimaru, destroys Sasori's Hiruko body with Yamato exposed, forcing him to call in Naruto, Sakura, and Sai. Eventually, Naruto is drawn into battle with Orochimaru, eventually consumed by the Nine Tails as the boy is transformed into four-tailed manifestation of the Tailed Beast. Consumed mentally, Naruto attacks Orochimaru before Yamato uses his unique abilities to suppress the Nine Tails and returns Naruto to his normal state. By then, Naruto learns of the injury he inflicted on Sakura while under the Nine Tails's influence. Meanwhile, Sai joins Orochimaru on behalf of Danzo's organization, The Foundation, and is escorted to Orochimaru's lair with Team Kakashi following him.
Yamato, Naruto, and Sakura find Sai and restrain him for his treachery, though his mission is revealed to be to kill Sasuke rather than take him back alive. As they prepare to search for Sasuke, Sai questions Naruto's reasons for wanting to have Sasuke back, to which Naruto responds that the two formed a bond that he refuses to have broken. Intrigued by this concept of bonds, Sai rejoins them, even helping in capturing Kabuto. The group splits up, and Sai is the first to find Sasuke. Although Sai attempts to capture him on Naruto's behalf, Sasuke proves too strong as he overwhelms the assembled Team Kakashi. Despite this turn of events, Naruto refuses the Nine Tails's power before Sasuke enters the youth's mind and suppresses the Tailed Beast. As Sasuke prepares to kill them all, Orochimaru and Kabuto convince him to let them live so they can take out the Akatsuki for them before the three leave with the mission a failure.
Kakashi, hoping to help Naruto be a better match for Sasuke during their next meeting, begins to train him in creating a new attack. Once finding that Naruto has wind nature chakra, Kakashi helps him hone the ability to control wind. To expedite this process Kakashi has Naruto use his Shadow Clones to train with his hundreds of copies, allowing their collective knowledge to complete a year's worth of training in a few days. Meanwhile, after defeating the Two-Tails Jinchuriki Yugito Nii, Akatsuki's Immortal Duo Hidan and Kakuzu make their towards Konoha to further their organization's goal. Tsunade, determined to either capture or eliminate the pair, mobilizes the Niju Shotai, a group of twenty squads of four ninja assigned to accomplish this very task, to find the two.
After Naruto gains proper control over the wind element, Kakashi tells him that creating his own unique attack will require mixing wind with his Rasengan (螺旋丸, lit. spiral sphere, English manga: "Spiral Chakra Sphere"). As Naruto struggles to accomplish this task, a Niju Shotai team consisting of Shikamaru Nara and Asuma Sarutobi finds Hidan and Kakuzu. Although they are quickly able to deliver a fatal blow to Hidan, it becomes apparent that Hidan cannot be killed by normal means, as his immortality allows him to perform a ritual that inflicts pain both on himself and the person he "curses". Hidan ultimately succeeds in fatally wounding Asuma with a stake through the heart, despite Shikamaru's attempts to prevent this. As reinforcements arrive, the Akatsuki duo is driven off, and the Niju Shotai members return home to bury Asuma.
Shikamaru sets out with the remaining members of Team Asuma to find Hidan and avenge their teacher. To help them in their quest, Kakashi joins them as leader, leaving Yamato in charge of overseeing Naruto's training. Once they find the Akatsuki pair, Shikamaru restrains them with his shadow while Kakashi pierces Kakuzu's chest. But Kakuzu, having multiple extra hearts, survives the attack and frees Hidan, allowing the two to team up against the Konoha ninja. Needing to separate the two, Shikamaru captures Hidan again and leads him away, where he avenges Asuma by blowing Hidan up and burying his still speaking remains in his clan's forest where Hidan will never be found. Kakashi and the others have a considerably more difficult time with Kakuzu and his extra hearts before Naruto arrives with Yamato, Sakura, and Sai.
Having advanced his training enough to form a usable attack, Naruto uses his Rasengan Shuriken to inflict Kakuzu with massive damage before Kakashi lands the deathblow. Elsewhere, deciding he has learned all he can from Orochimaru, Sasuke attempts to kill his former mentor as he decides to initiate the body-stealing process. Through the use of his Sharingan (写輪眼, lit. "Copy Wheel Eye", English manga: "Mirror Wheel Eye"), Sasuke is able to turn the process around and absorbs Orochimaru into his own body. Now able to act on his whim, Sasuke decides to finally enact his plan to kill Itachi. To that end, he recruits Suigetsu Hozuki and Karin and Jugo to aid him in his hunt.
With Jugo joining his group Hebi, Sasuke and his comrades and split up to search for clues about Itachi's whereabouts. Once word of Orochimaru's defeat by Sasuke reaches Konoha, Naruto decides that this would be a good opportunity to try to retrieve Sasuke again. Realizing that Sasuke is looking for Itachi, Naruto sets out with Sakura, Sai, Kakashi, Yamato, and the members of Team 8 to find either of the Uchiha brothers. Akatsuki also learns of Orochimaru's defeat, and mobilizes Deidara and his new teammate Tobi to deal with Sasuke. The two soon find Sasuke, and Deidara meets him in battle, though Sasuke's abilities soon prove to be more than a match for Deidara's bombs.
Sasuke survives Deidara's strongest attacks, forcing the Akatsuki member to turn himself in a suicide bomber to take out his opponent. But Sasuke escapes the blast by sacrificing the snake summon Manda, though is forced to regroup with the other members of Hebi to rest. After he recuperates, they head to a nearby Akatsuki lair where Sasuke is able to meet with Itachi. Once Sasuke exhibits his increased skills, Itachi consents to meeting with him at an Uchiha site for their last battle. Meanwhile, having survived Deidara's blast and claiming himself to be the true leader of the Akatsuki while calling himself Madara Uchiha, Tobi assigns the Akatsuki's figurehead leader, Pain, the task of capturing Naruto. Before Pain can set out on this mission, however, Jiraiya infiltrates Amegakure, and Pain is forced to deal with him before he can go after Naruto.
After gathering some intelligence on Pain, Jiraiya goes to confront him. Before he can do so, however, he is found by Pain's partner, Konan, his former student. During a brief battle, Jiraiya begins to suspect that Pain is also a former student, Nagato, a belief that is confirmed upon the Akatsuki leader's arrival. Konan falls back while Pain battles with Jiraiya, and the two exchange blows with their summons. Once Jiraiya's toads begin to gain the upper hand, Pain summons two additional Pains to fight alongside him. Though caught off guard by this turn of events and left outnumbered, Jiraiya is able to finish off the three bodies. Believing the battle to be won, Jiraiya continues on his way, only to be badly injured by the appearance of three more Pains in addition to the three he just killed.
Though able to capture one of Pain's six bodies, Jiraiya is unable to defeat the other five. Knowing this will be the only chance to learn the truth behind Pain, he sends the captured body to Tsunade and goes to investigate the Akatsuki leader's secret. Jiraiya succeeds and sends his discovery to Naruto and the rest of Konoha, yet dies from his injuries. Elsewhere, Sasuke meets with Itachi, leaving Hebi behind to deal with his partner, Kisame. As Naruto and company near their location, Tobi steps in to stall them so that the two brothers can fight uninhibited. The battle between Sasuke and Itachi commences, and Sasuke is able to use his years of hatred to push Itachi to his limits.
To bring the battle to a swift end, Sasuke conjures up a bolt of lightning to strike Itachi down. Itachi survives the attack, but after removing Orochimaru from Sasuke's body and saying goodbye to his little brother, he dies. Tobi collects Sasuke to tend to his injuries, and Naruto, having lost Sasuke's trail, is forced to return home. Once Sasuke regains consciousness Tobi tells him of the Uchiha's history: that after he, Madara Uchiha, helped to found Konoha alongside the future First Hokage Hashirama Senju, a mistrust between Konoha's leadership and the Uchiha was created over the generations with the Nine-Tails worsening it. When years later the Uchiha began planning to overthrow this leadership, Itachi was ordered by Konoha to eliminate his own clan to prevent the Uchiha clan's rebellion. While Itachi did as instructed, he chose to spare Sasuke and lived as a criminal while lying to Sasuke so that he could someday kill him to avenge their family. At some point, Itachi contracted an incurable disease that shortened his lifespan considerably, yet he forced himself to stay alive so he could die by Sasuke's hands. Realizing that Itachi was as much of a victim as he was, Sasuke heads out to destroy Konoha.
Upon his return to Konoha, Naruto learns of Jiraiya's death. Knowing that Akatsuki will be coming for him and wanting to avenge his master, Naruto decides to learn how to use Senjutsu (仙術, lit. "sage techniques") to prepare himself for the inevitable encounter with Pain. He goes to the home of the toads to train, just as Jiraiya had years earlier, and leaves deciphering Pain's identity to his friends in Konoha. Elsewhere, Sasuke agrees to have Hebi, now renamed "Taka", work with Akatsuki in return for their help in destroying Konoha. Taka is sent to capture the eight-tailed beast, and upon finding its host, Killer Bee they engage him in battle. Even though Killer Bee proves more than a match for the four of them, he nevertheless decides to release the beast within him.
With the full power of the eight-tailed beast, Killer Bee is able to decimate Taka. Fearing the deaths of his teammates, Sasuke unleashes his newly acquired Mangekyō Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyō Sharingan, lit. "Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye") to suppress the beast's influence and capture Killer Bee. When the Raikage, the leader of Kumogakure and Killer Bee's brother, learns of this, he decides to convene the five Kage to discuss how to deal with the growing threat that is Akatsuki. As word of the meeting is sent out, Akatsuki attempts to extract the eight-tailed beast from Killer Bee's body, only to discover that the body is a fake and that Killer Bee still roams free. Elsewhere, Naruto masters senjutsu and begins to apply its teachings to some of his old techniques. While he does so, Pain's six bodies arrive in Konoha and attack the village in search of him. Taken by surprise, Konoha mobilizes its forces, Kakashi even engaging two of Pain's bodies at once.
Although he is able to defeat one of Pain's bodies, Kakashi is unable to land a blow on another and is left on the brink of death. After one final valiant effort to ensure that the intel gathered on Pain is not wasted, he dies and reunites with his father in the afterlife. Across the village, Konoha's other ninja have similar difficulties with the remaining bodies, all the while struggling to find out as much as they can about Pain and protect Naruto's location. Pain eventually discovers Naruto's whereabouts and destroys Konoha to teach the villagers the pain of fighting. Naruto returns from his training immediately following Pain's attack, and takes it upon himself to avenge the damage done to the village and its inhabitants. Using his new senjutsu abilities, Naruto handily reduces the Pain's body number to two.
Naruto is able to finish off one of Pain's two remaining bodies, but is defeated and pinned down by the last one. Pain explains his motivations and asks what Naruto would do to bring about peace, but Naruto is unable to answer. Hinata intervenes to die defending Naruto, declaring her love for him, and is nearly killed. In his anger over all that has happened, Naruto almost releases the demon fox from his body, but is stopped by the spirit of the Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze, who reveals that he is Naruto's father. Minato brings Naruto back to his senses and, during a brief conversation, voices his suspicions that Pain and Akatsuki are only being manipulated by Tobi. Before disappearing he suppresses the fox's influence and trusts Naruto to find a way to bring about peace. Revitalized, Naruto faces off with Pain's last body, eventually defeating it.
Using the knowledge gathered from Jiraiya and other Konoha ninja, Naruto locates Nagato, the emaciated man who controls all of Pain's bodies. Before deciding what to do with him, Naruto asks how Nagato, a fellow pupil of Jiraiya, could have gone so astray. Nagato explains how the various tragedies he experienced in his life led him to desire peace through war. Naruto rejects his conclusion for differing from Jiraiya's ideals and resolves to find peace some other way, a dream both Nagato and Jiraiya once shared. To that end, he spares Nagato, as his death would only produce another war. Amazed, Nagato decides to put faith in Naruto's method and sacrifices his life to revive everyone that died in Konoha's defense. In the aftermath, Naruto is finally hailed as a hero, the village starts to rebuild, and Tsunade, having expended all of her energy to protect the villagers from Pain, falls into a coma. Danzo Shimura, Sai's superior, replaces her as Hokage and as his first act orders Sasuke be executed as a traitor to the village.
The five Kage gather to decide how to keep the remaining tailed beasts away from Akatsuki. Naruto Uzumaki, Kakashi Hatake and Yamato also attend in secret, hoping to convince the Kage to forgive Sasuke Uchiha for his crimes; Sai, Sakura Haruno, Lee and Kiba follow in an attempt to tell Naruto about their comrades' decision to kill Sasuke themselves. While Naruto is resting, Taka arrives at the Kage meeting to kill Danzo (a conspirator in the Uchiha clan's assassination). Their presence is soon discovered, and the Kage mobilize to deal with them. The Raikage, believing that Akatsuki still has Killer Bee, fights Sasuke. Madara has a brief confrontation with Naruto and tells him the truth about the Uchiha clan.
Unable to defeat the Raikage and his allies, Sasuke flees. He tries to focus his efforts on Danzo, but the other Kage intervene and defeat him. Danzo leaves the Kage when he is revealed to be manipulating them with a Sharingan. His life is saved by Madara Uchiha, who asks the Kage to give him Killer Bee and Naruto so he can use the tailed beasts to control the world. The Kage refuse, and he declares war against them. Madara disappears with Sasuke, and the Kage join forces against Akatsuki. As they begin preparing for battle, Kisame Hoshigaki finds Killer Bee and tries to capture him. He almost succeeds, but when the Raikage arrives to punish Bee for pretending to be captured Kisame is apparently killed by the two brothers.
When Danzo returns to Konohagakure, he is confronted by a recuperated Sasuke who tries to kill him. After holding his own, Danzo is outmatched. To survive he takes Karin hostage, but Sasuke mortally wounds them both. Danzo initiates a suicide jutsu to take Sasuke and Madara with him, but they escape it. As Madara leaves, Sasuke tries to finish off Karin. He is stopped by Sakura, who failed to bring back Naruto and abandoned the rest of her group. Before they can kill each other, Kakashi arrives to kill Sasuke.
After learning about Sakura and Sasuke's actions from Sai and Gaara, Naruto saves Sakura from being killed by Sasuke and calms the situation. Recognizing that words alone cannot change Sasuke, Naruto says that they will meet on the battlefield as Madara told him. Although Naruto says they will both die, Sasuke promises to be stronger than Naruto by then. They part, with Sasuke joining Madara and Naruto returning to Konoha with Sakura and Kakashi (taking Karin prisoner). The factions prepare for the future and Tsunade, awakening from her coma, reluctantly agrees with the other Kage to send Naruto and Bee into hiding on Bee's island to keep them safe from Akatsuki. When they meet there, Naruto asks Bee to tame the Nine-Tails (since Bee has tamed his Eight-Tails), but Bee can do nothing until he overcomes the evil in his heart from a life of loneliness.
Naruto vanquishes the evil in his heart because the loneliness which created it is past. Killer Bee shows him how to tame the demon fox: by removing the seal keeping the fox within him and overpowering it. The fox's strength and cunning are too much for him, and he is almost defeated; the spirit of Kushina Uzumaki stops the fox, reveals herself as Naruto's mother and gives him the resolve to contain the fox. Kushina tells Naruto how she and Minato fell in love and how the demon fox was originally sealed in her; Madara Uchiha used the fox to attack Konoha, and Kushina and Minato (believing that Naruto would defeat Madara) gave their lives to seal the fox's power in him. Kushina feels guilty about what Naruto has been through, but he does not blame her and allows her to pass on with no regrets.
Because he has conquered the demon fox, Naruto can detect Kisame (who faked his death and hid in his sword to spy on Bee). He tries to escape with what he has learned. For a third time he battles Might Guy, and is defeated. To keep Konoha from obtaining intelligence about Akatsuki from him, Kisame commits suicide and sends the information he has gathered to Madara. Madara goes to Amegakure to retrieve Nagato's body, killing Konan when she tries to stop him. When he receives Kisame's information, Madara sends Kabuto Yakushi (who is allied with Akatsuki) to capture Bee and Naruto. They are too well-defended, so Kabuto kidnaps Yamato.
Akatsuki and the Ninja Alliance Army complete their preparations and mobilize for war. After learning how to use Orochimaru's techniques, Kabuto revives several once-famous ninja to supplement Akatsuki's army. A small ninja strike force defeats some of the ninja (including Sasori and Deidara), but is less successful with a second revived group which includes Zabuza Momochi and Haku. Kakashi and his portion of the ninja army defeat Zabuza and Haku before turning their attention to the rest of the group.
Darui, a soldier in the Ninja Alliance Army, engages the most notorious criminal duo in Kumogakure: the Gold and Silver Brothers Ginkaku and Kinkaku, who have been resurrected and deployed by Akatsuki. A revived Asuma Sarutobi rejoins (and confronts) his former students Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka and Choji Akimichi. Mifune, the samurai general, fights his long-time ninja rival Hanzo of the Salamander. Since Ginkaku and Kinkaku possess the Nine-Tails' chakra, their attacks affect Naruto (who is unaware that the army is hiding him).
Learning about the war, Naruto and Killer Bee confront Iruka and escape from their hideout to support their comrades. Madara interrupts the war to steal the Gold and Silver Brothers' chakra; as night falls, both sides take a break to prepare for another encounter (each having lost half their forces). Naruto and Killer Bee are intercepted by the Raikage and Tsunade, who insist that hosts of Tailed Beasts should not participate. Tsunade decides to rely on Naruto's strength, and Bee and Naruto convince the Raikage to let them go when they use their abilities to defeat Akatsuki.
Naruto and Killer Bee deal with the army of Zetsus, beings created by Madara with the First Hokage's DNA and posing as allies. Gaara and the Tsuchikage Ōnoki's forces reach the four Kage who were revived by Kabuto. After Gaara defeats his father (the Fourth Kazekage) Naruto and Bee are confronted by Nagato and Itachi, who are under Kabuto's control. Itachi frees himself and helps the two hosts defeat Nagato. Itachi leaves to fight Kabuto alone, letting Naruto handle Sasuke. Naruto and Bee join the Ninja Alliance Army, with Naruto creating clones to fight the Second Tsuchikage, Mū and the Third Raikage.
After Gaara defeats the Second Mizukage, the Ninja Alliance gains the advantage in the war; Naruto's clones identify the Zetsus. Kabuto uses the Second Tsuchikage to revive his strongest warrior: Madara Uchiha. This reveals that the Akatsuki leader, Tobi, has been using Madara's name to wield power. With Madara overwhelming Gaara and Ōnoki's forces, the other three Kage come to their aid. Naruto and Bee encounter Tobi, who tries to kidnap them. Using Nagato's Rinnegan, Tobi ambushes Naruto and Bee with the bodies of former hosts, who fight using the tailed beasts again sealed within them.
Kakashi Hatake and Might Guy join the fight but, despite their assistance, Naruto and Killer Bee cannot stop the tailed beasts controlled by Tobi. When Naruto is swallowed by Son Gokū the Four-Tails, he removes the piercing in his body which Tobi used to control it. The nine-tailed fox Kurama joins forces with Naruto for the first time, allowing him to stop the other five tailed-beasts. While reinforcements from the alliance assist Naruto, the five Kages continue their losing battle against Madara and Sasuke learns about the war.
Sasuke finds the revived Itachi, and follows him to Kabuto's hideout. As Itachi tries to trap Kabuto with illusions, forcing him to return his army to the afterlife, Sasuke agrees to help him if he reveals his feelings about the Uchiha massacre. During the fight Kabuto blocks his own vision, making the siblings' illusionary techniques useless against him. Sasuke and Itachi remain on the defensive until Itachi uses a forbidden technique which traps Kabuto's mind in a loop where the fight against the Uchiha never ends. With Kabuto unable to move, Itachi uses his Genjutsu to summon the undead ninja.
Itachi summons all Kabuto's undead warriors except Madara, who remains on the battlefield by severing his ties with Kabuto's technique. Itachi returns to the afterlife after saying farewell to Sasuke, who begins to question his own motives. When Suigetsu and Jugo's scroll convince him to find answers, Sasuke revives Orochimaru. As Orochimaru takes back his chakra from Kabuto and guides Sasuke to those with the answers, Naruto, Kakashi, Guy and Bee continue fighting Tobi. With no choice, Tobi adds the discarded chakra traces of Kurama and Gyuki to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to begin the Ten-Tails' resurrection.
Naruto destroys Tobi's mask, revealing his identity as Obito Uchiha (one of Kakashi's teammates, believed to have died in the previous war). After defeating the five Kages, Madara comes to Obito's assistance. It is learned that several years earlier, an elderly Madara found Obito's severely-wounded body and saved his life. Obito sought rehabilitation to rejoin his team, and learned that Kakashi and Rin were in danger. When he found them, Obito saw Kakashi kill Rin while they were surrounded by enemies. Obito saved Kakashi and began sharing Madara's goal of an illusionary world so the "cycles of the world" could be broken. As Madara died, Obito adopted his name and manipulated Nagato to create Akatsuki and capture the nine-tailed beasts required to reach his goal.
The fight between Naruto's group and Obito and Madara is cut short by the resurrection of the incomplete ten-tailed beast. Obito and Madara train it to attack Naruto's group, overpowering them. Before their defeat, the Shinobi Alliance comes to Naruto's defense. Despite their efforts, the beast becomes more powerful. Several allies (including Neji) die protecting Naruto, who is in shock. Hinata Hyuga encourages him to continue fighting to protect their wills. Naruto shares Kurama's chakra with his comrades to create another combination which severs Obito and Madara's link to the Ten-Tails.
In Konoha, Orochimaru summons the shikigami to revive the four Hokages. Before he decides what to do with the Hokages, Sasuke asks them what they know of Konoha and the Uchiha's origins. The First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, tells Sasuke that during his childhood the Senju and Uchiha clans were at war and he met Madara in secret. Sharing the objective of a world without war, Hashirama and Madara became friends. However, they were found by their clans and became leaders (and enemies) in the war. After years of fighting, Madara accepted Hashirama's proposal to end the war and Konoha was created; however, the two clans' hatred resulted in Madara abandoning Konoha. Madara kept attacking the village until he was apparently killed by Hashirama. Realizing that Hashirama and Itachi shared the same dreams, Sasuke accompanies Orochimaru, Taka and the Hokages to the battlefield.
As the battle between the Ninja Alliance and the Uchiha rages, Obito takes Kakashi to another dimension to keep him from attacking the Ten-Tails. During hand-to-hand combat in the Kamui dimension, the alliance tries to stop the tailed beast from leaving the area. They are joined by Sasuke, Jugo and the reanimated Hokages, who create a barrier around the area while Sasuke rejoins his former teammates from Konoha to stop the Ten-Tails. Kakashi mortally wounds Obito when he returns to the battlefield. Madara tries to revive Obito with his life; Obito resists, sealing the Ten-Tails within himself as its new host.
After becoming the Ten Tails' host, Obito attacks the Second, Third and Fourth Hokages and Madara faces the First. As the Hokages are overpowered, Naruto and Sasuke aid them but are powerless against the Ten-Tails' host. To restore his son's strength, Minato shares Kurama's other half (sealed within him) so they can fight Obito together. Obito releases the true form of the Ten-Tails, the Divine Tree, which attacks the Ninja Alliance to seize their chakras and create the illusionary world. Unwilling to surrender, Naruto and Sasuke again confront Obito after he transfers his suffering to Ino.
Naruto and Sasuke continue fighting against Obito, while the Alliance joins forces with the Hokages and Orochimaru to destroy the Divine Tree. Naruto and Sasuke overwhelm Obito, allowing Naruto to free the tailed beasts inside him. Kakashi tries to kill the defeated Obito, but is stopped by Minato. Naruto and Sasuke help Hashirama face Madara. To atone for his actions, Obito sacrifices his life to revive the people he killed; however, Black Zetsu forces him to revive Madara instead.
With the Rinnegan and his new life, Madara absorbs Hashirama's chakra and uses the sealing statue to reclaim all the tailed beasts (including Naruto's Nine-Tailed Fox, nearly killing his host). Sasuke and the Second Hokage are defeated by Madara. Tobi, the spiral White Zetsu befriended by Obito during his time with Madara, appears and attacks the Ninja Alliance. Gaara grabs Naruto and brings him to Sakura, who performs CPR. Gaara then brings him to the Fourth Hokage to give him his part of the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra, but it is stolen by Black Zetsu. Madara confronts Minato's group to recover his Rinnegan from Obito. The reformed Obito allies with Kakashi, distracting Madara as Obito passes Naruto the tailed beasts' chakra. Guy decides to sacrifice his life fighting Madara.
Guy battles Madara; Naruto and Sasuke have a dream in which they talk with the Sage of the Six Paths, who identifies them as reincarnations of his two children. Since Madara is also a reincarnation, the Sage gives Naruto and Sasuke his chakra to stop him. When he awakens, Naruto saves Guy and begins battling Madara with Sasuke. They overwhelm Madara, forcing him to retreat to another dimension to steal Obito's Rinnegan. He uses the two Rinnegans to activate Infinite Tsukuyomi and place humanity under an illusion. Madara confronts Team 7 (who have avoided the illusion), but is stabbed in the back by Black Zetsu. Madara mutates into Kaguya Otsutsuki, the Sage's mother, who wants to transform humanity into White Zetsus.
Kaguya faces Naruto and Sasuke (who plan to use their new powers to seal her in her native dimension), and transports Sasuke to another dimension to stop them. While Kaguya faces Naruto alone, Sakura and Obito search for Sasuke by using the Sakura's chakra and Obito's eye technique. Although they bring Sasuke back to the battlefield, Obito sacrifices himself to protect Team 7 from an attack. Willing his dream of becoming Hokage to Naruto, Obito passes away and rejoins Rin in the afterlife. He transfers his energy to Kakashi so that he can use his Mangekyo Sharingan. With Kakashi and Sakura's help, Naruto and Sasuke seal Kaguya.
As Team 7 returns to their world, the Hokage and Obito bid them farewell and depart for the afterlife as Madara dies of his injuries. Before he and Naruto can undo the illusion, Sasuke reveals his intention to murder the Kage and Naruto (canceling the Infinite Tsukiyomi with the captured Tailed Beasts and killing them as well). Sasuke explains his intention to begin a worldwide revolution to reform the ninja system, which Naruto forbids. Sasuke knocks Sakura out to keep her from interfering, and he and Naruto agree to settle things at the Valley of the End (where their conflict began). The battle ends with both ninja losing their dominant arms and Sasuke's redemption by Naruto. After Sakura saves them from bleeding to death, Naruto and Sasuke cancel the Infinite Tsukiyomi. Kakashi becomes the Sixth Hokage and pardons Sasuke, who decides to travel the world. Several years later, with a new arm and married to Hinata, Naruto (now the Seventh Hokage) attends the Five Kage Summit in Konoha after dealing with the antics of his son, Boruto Uzumaki.
During the Third Great Ninja War, Kakashi, along with his teammate Obito Uchiha, went to rescue their teammate Rin Nohara from the enemy. They were attacked by enemy ninja, who proceeded to permanently scar Kakashi's eye and crush Obito under a boulder. As his dying act, Obito gives his Sharingan to Kakashi, who woefully leaves with Rin and is rescued by their sensei, the future Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze.
In a flashback seven years prior, a high school-aged Scott forms a band with Kim and his friend Lisa Miller, and later rescues Kim when she is kidnapped by students from a rival school. In the present, Scott confronts Ramona's second evil ex Lucas Lee, an actor and professional skateboarder shooting a movie in Toronto, who informs Scott about the "League of Evil Exes". Scott is able to defeat Lucas by goading him into skateboarding and subsequently crashing down the Baldwin Steps. Scott breaks up with Knives after Wallace threatens to tell Ramona about her, though Knives later learns about Ramona and attacks her. Later, Scott receives a call from his ex-girlfriend Envy Adams, who asks him to open for her band The Clash at Demonhead. At the band's concert, Ramona identifies Clash at Demonhead's bassist as her ex-boyfriend Todd Ingram.
Scott attempts to fight Todd, but is powerless against his psychic vegan powers. Through a flashback, Envy's background as a quiet and mousey girl who developed a callous and aggressive personality as her music career ascended is revealed. Envy attempts to organize a competition between Scott and Todd at Honest Ed's, but Todd's psychic powers destroy the store. When Envy discovers that Todd has been cheating on her with the band's drummer, he attacks her. Scott and Todd battle again, which is won by Scott after the Vegan Police arrive and strip Todd of his psychic powers for having violated his vegan diet (by eating gelato and chicken parmesan). Scott earns an extra life and Envy leaves Toronto to pursue a solo career.
Stephen begins to record an album for Sex Bob-omb with Kim's roommate Joseph. Scott is attacked by a samurai and a ninja; the latter is revealed to be Roxie Richter, Ramona's fourth evil ex. Scott is kicked out of the apartment by Wallace, and gets into a fight with Ramona after she suspects that Scott is attracted to Lisa. He stays at Lisa's apartment, where Roxie infiltrates his dreams and attacks him. Scott awakens without memories of the previous night, though Lisa informs him that he confessed that he loved Ramona. The samurai is revealed to be Knives's father Mr. Chau, who disliked that his daughter was dating a white person. When he attacks Scott again, Scott escapes via a subspace portal and ends up in Ramona's mind, where he sees her as a slave to a shadowy figure. Upon exiting, Scott encounters his dark self – "NegaScott" – and rejects it. He returns to find Ramona being attacked by Mr. Chau. Realizing his cowardice, Scott confesses that he loves Ramona and earns The Power of Love, a sword he uses to defeat Roxie. Mr. Chau leaves, having earned respect for Scott, and Scott moves in with Ramona.
Scott and Ramona's relationship has begun to deteriorate, as Scott begins to believe that she may still be interested in Gideon. While Scott fights a robot created by Ramona's twin exes Kyle and Ken Katayanagi, Knives tells Ramona that Scott dated them both at the same time. Ramona confronts Scott over his infidelity, and tells him he is another evil ex waiting to happen. The twins kidnap Kim; Scott is about to lose the fight, but emerges victorious when Kim lies and says that Ramona texted her. Scott returns to Ramona, who tearfully bids Scott goodbye and fades away. A short time later, Scott receives a phone call from Gideon, who asks him if he has "time to die."
Four months have passed since Ramona's disappearance. In order to reinvigorate Scott, Wallace sends him on a "wilderness sabbatical" to Kim's home in Northern Ontario. The trip prompts Scott to remember that he never actually saved Kim from being kidnapped; the revelation prompts NegaScott to again emerge. Though he initially wishes to defeat NegaScott in order to forget his relationship with Ramona, he instead merges with NegaScott, thus remembering and accepting responsibility for his poor actions in his previous relationships. Scott returns to Toronto to fight Gideon at his newly-opened club, where Envy is making her solo debut. Gideon invites Scott to join the League Of Evil Exes; when Scott refuses, Gideon kills him with the Power of Love sword. Scott awakens in a desert, where he encounters Ramona. They reconcile and Scott uses his extra life to return to the club, where he confronts Gideon inside Ramona's subspace and encourages Ramona to overcome Gideon's influence. When Scott witnesses Gideon berate Envy, he realizes he has been no better than Gideon in his past relationships, causing him to gain the Power of Understanding. Scott and Ramona unite, defeat Gideon together, and decide to give their relationship another chance. In an epilogue, Scott works as a co-chef with Stephen, who reveals he is gay and dating Joseph. Scott and Kim start a new band, and Knives leaves to attend university. Scott and Ramona affirm their desire to face the challenges of a relationship together, and walk hand-in-hand into a subspace door.
