The Redeemer: A Service of Sacred Music, written by former Tabernacle organist Robert Cundick, was performed as an Easter Concert in March 2008 by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. The Choir and Orchestra are joined in this performance by distinguished soloists. Scored for choir, orchestra, and soloists, it was written by Dr. Robert Cundick, former Salt Lake Tabernacle organist for 27 years. This video captures the performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square conducted by Dr. Mack Wilberg on the 30th anniversary of the work's premiere. The creation of "The Redeemer" grew out of a desire by Brigham Young University professor of music Ralph Woodward to produce a work of genuine stature that would have meaning for not only Latter-day Saints but all Christians. He selected the text from all four of the standard works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He then approached Dr. Cundick to compose the music for the work, which was completed over an intense 10-week period in late 1977. The work was premiered by the music ensembles at BYU in the spring of 1978. Interestingly, a significant number of Mormon Tabernacle Choir members singing in this concert were students in that original performance. The Redeemer: A Service of Sacred Music, by Robert Cundick.
