上州新田郡三日月村の貧しい農家に生まれた紋次郎は、十歳のときに故郷を捨て、その後一家は離散したという天涯孤独の身。いつしか無宿渡世の世界に足を踏み入れ、長楊枝をくわえてあてのない旅を続けている。何事にも関わりを避ける紋次郎だが、行く先々で事件に関わることになる……。
