Die Regierung setzt nun alles daran, das Geld ins Land zurückzutransferieren. Bei einem Schachturnier wird der Großmeister des Landes darauf angesetzt, in den Besitz der Goldbarren zu kommen. Doch Phelps und sein Team sind längst zur Stelle und schaffen es, mittels eines Computers den Schachprofi hinters Licht zu führen...
Nicholas Groat, a grandmaster chessplayer, organizes a team that plans to steal gold intended for the underground in an Eastern bloc country that was intercepted by the country's authorities. The IMF must recover the gold from the authorities and keep Groat from getting it. Groat forces the authorities to move the gold from a bank to a vault at the hotel where he (and Rollin) are playing in a tournament. The hotel puts a time lock on the vault for extra security, but Groat notices that Rollin is cheating, using a hearing aid. When he forces Rollin to demonstrate, the computer "inadverently" accelerates timepieces, so Groat wants to use it to get into the vault. Rollin agrees, but requires Groat use his team. Willy fakes a typhoid outbreak and Dr. Phelps administers shots to the guards which are actually sedatives. With Groat's help they get into the vault, then take the gold at gunpoint and leave him there.

Celui-ci risque en effet de tomber entre les mains d'une puissance étrangère. Afin que le précieux chargement reste bien sur le sol américain, l'équipe de l'IMF est chargée d'intervenir. Rollin Hand se rend dans l'hôtel où Groat est installé et décide de le défier à l'occasion d'une partie d'échecs féroce...
Esta vez, objetivo de Jim y su equipo es un gran maestro internacional del ajedrez, que planea robar el oro incautado a un movimiento opositor de un país del bloque soviético. Rollin se hace pasar por un jugador de ajedrez aficionado, ayudado por una computadora que Barney está operando y que es imbatible en ese juego. El plan, ideado por Phelps, también requiere una ingeniosa forma de arrebatar el oro tanto al ajedrecista como a las autoridades.
