Frank und seine Familie reisen nach Arlington, Virginia, zu einem Treffen mit Catherines Eltern Justine und Tom Miller sowie ihrer Schwester Dawn und ihrem Ehemann Gil. Im Anschluß an das große Familienessen bittet Tom Frabk um einen Gefallen: Der Sohn seines Freundes C.R., Malcolm, soll seine Ehefrau ermordet haben. Malcolm habe während des gesamten Prozesses jedoch seine Unschuld beteuert. Tom zuliebe erklärt sich Frank bereit, einen Blick in die Gerichtsakten zu werfen. Dabei entdeckt er zwar keinen eindeutigen Hinweis auf die Unschuld von Malcolm Hunziger. Er entdeckt jedoch Parallelen zu einigen ganz ähnlichen Morden, für die Malcolm als Täter garantiert ausscheidet.
Frank is asked by Catherine's father to investigate a case involving a friend whose son has been convicted of murder, and is soon convinced that the murder is linked to a serial killer called The Woodsman. Having claimed his latest victim, the Woodsman takes the body to a secluded campsite, covers the body in plastic, buries her under a pile of leaves and strikes up a conversation. Later, he is given photos by a mysterious stranger and asked to use them as 'targets' for future killings - one of which includes Catherine Black...
Frank se trouve indirectement mêlé à une affaire de meurtre. Un homme est, en effet, accusé d'avoir tué son épouse. Malgré les apports de l'enquête et les pièces à conviction qui accusent le mari, Frank n'est pas convaincu de la culpabilité de ce dernier. Il est prêt à tout pour tenter d'innocenter le prévenu, qui risque ni plus ni moins que la peine de mort. Frank est en fait persuadé d'avoir affaire à un psychopathe et serial killer, car la victime présentait la particularité, qu'on a retrouvée sur d'autres cadavres dans la région, d'avoir le larynx excisé.
