Without Italy no World War 2? Germany's dependency on Italy

How important was Italy for Germany, generally Italy is often dismissed as a partner to Germany, some go as far as noting that Germany would have better off in World War 2 without Italy. Although, if we want to take a proper approach we also must look at how Italy brought to the table, especially before the war.
