Composer Ades employs a variety of musical styles and forms, ranging from dissonance to lyrical tonality and even a form borrowed from baroque era - a passacaglia for five voice in the third act. As one reviewer wrote of it: "Contemporary lyriic opera is still viable... [this} looks and behaves like an opera... characterization and dramatic pacing are wonderfully sustained."
