Bestsellerautor Steven Cassidy wird erschossen in seiner Wohnung aufgefunden. Des Mordes beschuldigt wird Vanessa Douglas, die geschiedene Frau von Senator James Douglas. Cassidy wollte ein Buch über die Familie schreiben. Vanessa wäre darin sehr schlecht weggekommen. Für Matlock kein ausreichendes Motiv für einen Mord. Er übernimmt den Fall.
