    • January 1, 2020
    • YouTube

This week you will get a deeper introduction to how the muting system of the MMX works. I also stumble upon some tweaks that needs to be fixed to make the MMX wourld tour and recording ready. As always the tedious number 38 is there to remind us how the simplest task becomes time consuming. Thanks for all your amazing support last year and happy 2020 to you all! • S2020E03 Electric Motor? - Marble Machine X #114

    • February 26, 2020
    • YouTube

"I am attaching an electric Motor to power the Marble Machine X, The primary reason is to exclude human errors in the power input while calibrating the musical timing. The Electric motor provides a constant torque and will increase the accuracy of these timing tests. The Motor is placed on a temporary location just to make these tests. (i wouldnt put it there in plain sight if it was included in final design) The secondary reason to include a motor in the would be the extra tightness of the music, enabling stage dive mode and frees up my hands to control the machine. Or play guitar solo with the Marble Machine X backing me up. Adding an electric motor permanently to the drive train changes the identity of the Marble Machine X quite a lot and it is not a decision i make easily. I have been actively against this during the whole development process but perhaps, perhaps, the identity change is for the better when all pros and cons are added up. Steam punk level decreases, musical tightness increases. And what cons would actually outweigh the stage dive mode pro? Do we want nostalgia or do we want groove? Do we want to be very principal about aesthetics or do we want to go for functional? These are the eternal questions we can entertain ourselves with in this process. With the motor hidden away inside the machine and with Alex CNCs magical electric skills allowing the motor to act as a helper maybe we can have the best of both worlds. The longer i work on the project the more i tend to go for function over form - we have built so much attitude into the design already that we wont risk killing it all by making things a bit easier at this stage. But again, motor is a fundamental change. Huge thanks to Alex: ►Alex Füßl | Alex CNC | Munich, Germany https://www.youtube.com/alexcnc https://www.youtube.com/AlexCNCen But for the timing tests that are up next there is no question - this motor will be a game changer for MMX accuracy. Even when onl

  • S2020E04 Playing Tight Music? - Marble Machine X #115

    • March 4, 2020
    • YouTube

"How tight music can the Marble Machine X actually play? Thats a question i been asking myself everyday during this project and today we are getting a bit closer to an answer. We have built in a lot of calibration possibilities in the design of the MMX and the goal with this video is to show you how we can calibrate the timing in several ways. Next up is bass guitar and funnels, when all the funnels are connected the machine is almost completed in its basic design There will be a lot of small things that needs to be added here and there before we can move on to the final stage which is audio. In this video you are hearing the machine sounding through a variety of non intended recorded methods, most often played through my speakers and then into the wireless mic sitting on me and things are booming a lot in my ill sounding stone room. We are doing a total overhaul acoustic treatment of my studio this spring together with https://www.id-acoustique.com which will deal with this in a wonderful way. Thanks for following the build and good luck with everything you are doing! // Martin"

"A 2-year darling project in the MMX Process has crossed its finish line, a huge thanks to the whole Funnel Team for going that extra distance with these Stainless Steel Marble Catchers. After trying out Silver brazing to join these funnels we ended up using Silicone Bronze TIG Brazing and it worked out great. Silicone Bronze TIG Brazing was an instant favourite joining method, which is great since i still have 13 funnels to assemble... "Reparing the Conveyor belt into ""World Tour Safe"" condition. Lots and lots and lots of work like this to do on a machine that has more parts than a car and is designed by an optimistic amateur mechanical designer. Im back at building on the machine itself after taken care of the project management part of the machine - so now while i have been repairing the conveyor the team has been busy all over the world working on other aspects of the build. The multiplier in efficiency i wanted to achieve has become real. Very happy for this. Expect more build videos over the summer. The lingering cloud on the marble track sky is that i designed these tracks to look like marbles could easily fall out and i did my job so well so some marbles do actually fall out. Some extra fencing here and there and some extra bending of the plywood is needed. Quite annoying but par for the course for the MMX and my special brand of over optimistic designs. Tweaking this is added on the to-do list which means it will be fixed. • S2020E25 Marble Divider Redesign? - Marble Machine X #136

Check out the Wilson / Angle Grinder t-shirt design project here: https://wintergatan.net/pages/angle-g... Tried to invite you a little bit more behind the scenes of the cooking show in this one. Redesigning the Marble divider and a lot of other parts for the Marble Machine X was not an easy decision to make - but absolutely necessarry to make the machine function. Still after years of working with marbles I am still underestimating the impact of the amount of repetitions of marble drops that are needed to work flawlessly on the marble machine X, if the fail chance is 0000,1 % and we have 100 000 repetitions the chance of failure is too high. Designing something that fixes this might seem like a backlash but after accepting facts it is the fastest way forward. thanks for following the build have a great day// Martin ????/????

  • S2020E28 Testing the Marble Module & Introducing the MMX CAD Team! - Marble Machine X #139

Meet the amazing MMX Cad Team on the Wintergatan Discord server: https://discord.gg/wintergatan Check Out Maureens Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qyim_... Check out Tim Kellers Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9GGr... In this episode I am building what I hope will be “the beginning to the end” - the new Marble Module. Next step for me is to cad & manufacture the continuation of the marble paths from the module out to the channels and later assemble this solution on the machine. Inspiration levels are high in the studio today. I am using time correctly and the community are pushing the CAD model which will take the MMX on a new adventure into the future. Have a nice day everyone and good luck with everything you are doing! / Martin P.S. I explained the non-concentric misalignment inside the video but we edited that part out so for the machining interested: The plywood stock was undersized - designed the cad for 18mm thickness of the ply but didnt care to check the ply stock size. the IRL thickness was surprisingly off - much thinner than 18mm causing the misalignment (birch ply have higher quality in sweden then the ply i have found in france). Rookie mistake, measure your stock by yourself - dont take the 18mm for granted just because it says on the package... This week we take a look at the amazing collection of self-playing instruments of "Siegfried's Mechanisches Music Kabinett" in Germany's town of Rüdesheim am Rhein. They even have a Self-Playing Banjo?! In three days we barely scratched the surface of the endless marvels these machines had in store for us, we need to look at these historical treasures in more detail, this calls for a new Music Machine Mondays series, coming up in the future. We can gladly recommend a visit to Rüdesheim - the museum reopens in March. Special thanks to Lucas Wendel for Making this Happen! Take care and good luck with everything you are doing / Martin

With the use of one analogy and another anecdote in this video i am trying to illuminate the reasoning behind the train change. This Time usage visualisation also aided me greatly in understanding the slow progress of the MMX in particular and the overall situation in general: https://we.tl/t-uKFvYG4tUu Looking forward to bringing you all with me on this part of the Journey, thanks to everyone being involved in the project and thanks to everyone for following the project and good luck with everything you are doing! // Martin
