茂七（高橋英樹）は本所相生町の岡っ引き。江戸前の、粋で人間好きな茂七は、十八歳になる娘・お絹（星野真里）と亡妻の母・おかつ（淡路恵子）と3人で暮らしている。耳かき作りで小遣い稼ぎをしながら、ひとたび事件が起きると、手下の糸吉（仁科貴）、権三（河西健司）ともども駆けつける。茂七のまわりにおきる事件はいつも不思議なものばかり。茂七の機転と知恵、そして情のあるさばきで事件を解決していく。時には人の心の奥底にひそむ「ふしぎ」に、茂七も苦悩しながら…。界わいには謎めいた人物もいる。いなり寿司屋の伊佐次（原田芳雄）は元武士。お家騒動の脱藩者だ。彼にも秘密があるようで…。おとぎ話のようなちょっと「ふしぎ」な世界が江戸の町を舞台に繰り広げられる。
