Basierend auf den beiden Biografien „ Conversations with Myself“ und „Nelson Mandela by Himself“ porträtiert Laurence Fishburne den Menschenrechtsaktivisten, Anwalt, politischen Gefangenen und späteren Präsidenten von Südafrika, beginnend in dessen Zwanzigern bis hin in Mandelas späte Jahre. Einen wichtigen Schwerpunkt legt die Serie auf die unermüdlichen Anstrengungen von Mandelas Familienmitgliedern, Freunden und Kollegen beim Afrikanischen Nationalkongress, ihn bei seinem Kampf gegen das Apartheitsregime zu unterstützen.

Madiba is based on two Mandela books, Conversations With Myself and Nelson Mandela by Himself. Named after Madiba, the Thembu clan to which Nelson Mandela belonged, the project tells the story of a younger Nelson Mandela during the early-60s as he deals with the political unrest engulfing South Africa. Shot exclusively in South Africa and on Robben Island, Madiba details the early years of Mandela’s personal journey, and reveals the behind-the-scenes strategizing and bold organizing tactics he and his collaborators used to bring attention to their movement both domestically and internationally.

Né en 1918 dans un petit village d'Afrique du Sud, Nelson Mandela reçoit très tôt le surnom de Xhosa, le «fauteur de trouble». Il grandit dans une famille aisée et reçoit une bonne éducation. A l'école, son institutrice lui donne le prénom de Nelson. Lorsqu'il quitte le domicile pour étudier le droit, il ne peut pas ignorer l'injustice subie par la majorité noire dans son pays. C'est alors qu'il rejoint le Congrès national africain...
