Rakugo storyteller Gagaku (Somegoro Ichikawa) is popular, talented, and brilliant, but cannot write stories well. His easy-going brother Yuraku (Moro Morioka) notices Gagaku stealing his stories and becomes enraged. In a fight, Yuraku is killed with Gagaku fleeing and using a prepared alibi for Furuhata. However, the detective notices Gagaku's unnatural behavior on stage and discovers evidence linking him to the fratricide.
落語家の気楽家雅楽（市川染五郎）は人気も実力も華もあるが上手く噺が作れない。そこで兄弟子の気楽家苦楽（モロ師岡）の作った作品を盗む。それに気付いた苦楽は憤慨するが、もめた際に雅楽に殺害される。雅楽はこの時のために準備したアリバイで古畑から逃げ回るが、雅楽が舞台で見せた不自然な行動から、古畑は遂に証拠を見つける。
