Die junge Rachel Burnett hat ihre Adoptiveltern ermordet aufgefunden. Da die Burnetts als Belastungszeugen gegen einen Mafia-Clan aussagen sollten, gehen Goren und Eames zunächst davon aus, dass die Mafia das Ehepaar umbringen ließ. Dann findet man jedoch heraus, dass Rachels vermeintlicher Freund in Wirklichkeit ihr Vater Trevor ist. Hat dessen Frau Nina der Mafia aus Eifersucht auf Rachel einen Tipp gegeben? Weitere Ermittlungen ergeben, dass Trevor vollkommen pleite ist. Da Rachels Adoptiveltern steinreich waren und er Rachels rechtmäßiger Erbe ist, ergibt sich nun ein ganz neuer Verdacht: Wollte er die gesamte Familie auslöschen, um sich selbst zu sanieren?

After Dennis and Camille Burnett are found dead in their home, the only survivor is their twenty-year-old daughter, Rachel. Goren and Eames initially suspect that someone connected with the Marinko family had the Burnetts killed, since they were in witness relocation, but the detectives soon realise that the connection isn't the parents, it's the daughter. Suspicion then turns to the daughter's biological parents and her birth father's very jealous wife.
