Next, Alison brings in basil colored cabinetry and adds dummy strap hinges for extra style. A dark birch engineered hardwood floor levels out the space and hand-painted tile, sconce lighting and butcher block countertops give the kitchen an urban farmhouse feel. In three days Alison transforms a dated design into a bachelor haven. She starts by knocking down a poorly placed divider between the kitchen and living room. A custom wet bar includes a built-in kegorator and soda water dispenser. Dark two-toned cabinets and white granite countertops wrap around the new layout, and a modern range hood doubles as a sleek lighting source. Glass tiles in cream and brown tones pick up the theme. Custom glass shelves add storage. The centerpiece of the new space is a massive bar island with a poured concrete top, built from the ground up by Alison and the brothers. Alison shows Jack how to add interest to a focal wall. Matt and Jack learn how to personalize beer glasses for friends and family.

  • S05E07 Thinking Outside the Box

An oddly placed peninsula interrupts movement. Their cooktop is failing and their oven is worse. Alison's transformation starts by knocking down a wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. A custom island adds work space and casual seating. White shaker cabinets brighten a dark corner. The focal point of the room is an upscale ocean-blue glass backsplash behind the range hood in oval mosaic pattern. Linear blue glass continues behind the sink, arranged in a simple brick pattern. A formerly unused wall is treated with shallow blue cabinets below a storage unit created from apple crates stained and installed by Tom and Alison. Clever blending creates the perfect color stain for new floorboards installed to patch bare spots created by the wall demolition. Alison literally brings the outdoors in with chunky live-edge shelves and an antler chandelier. Maggie and Alison build a rolling side table from a reclaimed log. Mitch and Alison construct a huge island table entirely from salvaged 2x4s. The focal point of the new dining area is a mural wall with a forest motif. For the kitchen, they build stools out of fresh timber, channeling out sections and adding a resin and copper mix that will sparkle underneath the breakfast bar. Space is at a premium in this city kitchen, so Alison has to get creative. She blocks off a window to make space for a refrigerator, pantry and desk area and then builds the entire design upwards using triple stacked cabinetry. Track lighting, under cabinet lighting and in-cabinet lighting help light and break up the space. Quartz countertops that look like marble and stainless steel appliances, including a hood with a double extension to the ceiling, add to the look. A chevron patterned backsplash, DIY island and personalized desk area backsplash give the space a one-of-a-kind touch.

She starts by eliminating the old peninsula and replacing it with a DIY island perfect for laying out a brunch spread. For the seating area, Alison adds a built-in banquette, wood paneled wall and "green" light fixture. The soffits are gone and replaced with floor to ceiling dark wood cabinetry, the tiny "chicken nugget" oven gets an upgrade to a full-size double oven and ugly tile flooring is replaced with wood.

Alex and Joe have a giant deck on the roof of their garage, but they've let it sit for nearly eight years because they've been too overwhelmed by the lack of privacy to build it up. Luckily, Alison has ideas and starts her design by enclosing the space with slatted pine privacy walls. To add function, she designs three separate spaces, a kitchen, dining area and lounge. In the kitchen, Alison brings in a giant grill, beverage refrigerator, cabinets, granite countertops and a sink. Alison and Alex team up to make DIY side tables that will go in the lounge area, right by the new fire pit. In the elevated dining area, Alison has seating for 8, a turf floor and plants to give the space a cozy feel.
