John begins to experience an onslaught of bizarre visions and images then blacks out — the visions lead him to a faceless murder victim and a cannery where the Phoenix Organization and the remote viewers were situated. John meets Sam of the NSA (the murdered man is one of Sam's undercover agents) and they manage to capture the Trenchcoat Man and discovers he's not deaf and speaks fluently in Sanskrit and Latin. Trenchcoat hints at John's destiny, how he's one of them, and that Michael (from "Remote Control") may still be alive and a key to the mystery – then he escapes using strange mental abilities of his own.
Sam introduces John as a "Class 1" to Lucas Doya, the founder of the U.S.'s own remote viewer program through the DoD — Doya puts John through a series of tests to heighten his own remote abilities and John locks on to Teresa in a copper mine. Alors qu'il prend un verre dans un bar, John Doe est hanté par des visions insupportables, dont il ne parvient pas à saisir le sens. Optimiste, Digger suppose que son ami est peut-être en train de retrouver la mémoire... Au fil des heures, les hallucinations devenant de plus en plus nettes, Doe parvient à y distinguer la forme de pylônes électriques. Dans le même temps, la police découvre un cadavre atrocement mutilé sous une ligne à haute tension. Alerté, John Doe se rend sur les lieux. De son oeil infaillible, l'amnésique omniscient repère une écaille de poisson collée sur l'un des bras de la dépouille. Un indice qui le conduit rapidement jusqu'à une conserverie, non loin de là.
John sperimenta alcune bizzarre visioni che lo conducono alla vittima senza volto di un omicidio e ad uno stabilimento dove si trovavano gli uomini dell'organizzazione Fenice. La vittima era un agente della NSA sotto copertura; per questo motivo John incontra Sam Clarkson e i due collaborano per incastrare l'uomo con il soprabito. Scoprono che questi non è sordo e parla fluentemente il latino ed il sanscrito. L'uomo rivela a John che Michael è ancora vivo e potrebbe essere la chiave del mistero. Poi usa alcune abilità mentali per fuggire. Sam conduce John da Doya, il quale sottopone l'uomo a dei test che rivelano dove si trovano Theresa e Michael. Questi ultimi, intanto, scoprono l'ubicazione del bastone pastorale: il Vaticano. L'uomo con l'impermeabile uccide Michael e, insieme all'uomo col berretto di lana, fugge portandosi dietro Theresa. John cerca di liberare la donna quando un fascio di luce illumina il volto dell'uomo col berretto di lana: si tratta di Digger.
