Although Bert Spencer was never charged in the 1978 death of newspaper delivery boy Carl Bridgewater, suspicion has long lingered over him, especially after he was convicted of a similar crime less than a year later. Professor David Wilson meets with Spencer to try to find out if the two crimes-and the killer-were related.
As Professor Wilson and his team of researchers sift through the case records, they realize that a number of witness statements challenge Spencer's version of events. When Wilson questions Spencer about the discrepancies, he responds aggressively.
Professor Wilson now believes he has enough information to formally confront Spencer with his findings. In the final showdown between the men, Wilson tells Spencer his theory of the crime and his diagnosis of Spencer's mental state. Then in one last twist, a witness breaks their silence after 38 years.
