  • S01E01 Episode 1

    Episode one takes William from Scotland to the Somme. Moving from the 17th century into the 19th he looks at the emergence of a distinctive Ulster identity. Against a backdrop of conflict and political uncertainty, he charts how the story of the 36th Ulster division's sacrifice becomes an integral part of Northern Ireland's own foundation story.

  • S01E02 Episode 2

    Episode two looks at how politicians, artists, writers and broadcasters continue to imagine Ulster in the new Northern Ireland state. From the conflict and uncertainty of the 1920s through to the hope of the 1960s, William Crawley explores loyalty and identity in a changing society.

  • S01E03 Episode 3

    From the violence of the 1970s, to the agreements of the 90s and beyond, the third and final episode explores some of the key moments of the past 50 years. William examines some of the individual voices, the groups and cultural, literary and political forces that have helped shape our sense of who we are. He also traces how the Ulster-Scots heritage has taken its place in the landscape of Northern Ireland.
