Tobacco has been present in society since the first century BC. But, as it began to grow and spread through European countries and the United States, tobacco became one of the most “successful” industries in the world. Federal governments were so invested in tobacco that they offered bail-out programs and issued cigarettes in rations to soldiers. But, in the 1950s, as smoking began to become linked to various diseases and health risks the tobacco industry began to face massive lawsuits that would change how the industry was run from then on.
