Unfortunately, they attracted a fair bit of negative attention, both from the straight press (which they welcomed) and from the less licit corners of the internet, resulting in their customer database and internal email servers being hacked in 2015. Hundreds of thousands of cheating spouses around the world found their infidelities exposed and their financial security put at risk. Amid the outcry and the subsequent governmental scrutiny, however, a deeper concern came to light, one that had haunted the company since its inception: had Ashley Madison been cheating its own customers this whole time?
