תא"ל שילה מאז"ה, חובש כיפה סרוגה, לוקח על עצמו תפקיד כמעט בלתי אפשרי - לפקד על מבצע ההתנתקות. ההחלטה מעמתת אותו עם הקהילה שלו ועם בני המשפחה הקרובים אליו ביותר - אשתו נעמה, שמתנגדת למהלך, אחותו עידית ובעלה מאיר, שמתגוררים בגוש קטיף ובנו לביא שמוצא את מקומו בין הגלים של חופי הגוש היפים. מנגד, הוא נמצא בקונפליקט גם עם סגנו, אבינועם ברנר, קיבוצניק שמתנגד למדיניות ההכלה שבה נוהג שילה כלפי המתנחלים.
