Even If You Stand Alone: The story of a man who fought for Civil Rights when it wasn’t cool or popular; who had the foresight to modernize the American Navy, and is the second VP to assume the presidency after the assassination of his predecessor. Even though he came to the office at the height of the spoils and patronage system of party politics, he showed the courage to stand against corruption, to place the nation’s interests above party affiliation, and become one of America’s most trusted yet least remembered Presidents - Chester A. Arthur.
Public Office, Public Trust: This was the campaign slogan for Stephen Grover Cleveland when he ran for president in 1884 and 1892. He’s the only president to serve non consecutive terms, to be married at the White House, and whose daughter, Ruth, was the real inspiration for the candy bar! He was straight forward and direct as a lawyer, and served as county sheriff and executioner- hangman- for Erie County, NY. He ended the Pullman railroad strike with direct military action and his political ideas and practices gave us the term “mugwump”- a politician with his “mug” in one camp and his “wump” in the other!
The Making of a Legend: Theodore Roosevelt was scrawny, sickly, and asthmatic kid; as he grew, he embraced the “strenuous life” and through his relentless physical work and strength of will he made of himself a rough and ready icon of manhood and masculinity. He was a lifelong naturalist, historian, athlete, and popular writer. He was a husband and father; he became a widower and an orphan on the same day, and proved that tough times don’t last, but tough men do. He was a cowboy, a rancher, and the Colonel of the famous “Rough Riders” 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, and he followed his legend right into the White House.
The American Spirit: He rose quickly in politics. Roosevelt’s energy and personality were overwhelming and irresistible. After the war, his rise to Governor of NY and Vice President were absolutely mercurial. In 1901 an assassin’s bullet took the life of President McKinley, Roosevelt assumed the nation’s highest office and the world would change forever! Trust Buster, Conservationist, avid outdoorsman, and “international buckaroo”: TR was the true champion of American Exceptionalism. As he is the only man to receive both the Congressional Medal of Honor AND the Nobel Peace Prize, Theodore Roosevelt epitomizes the American Spirit.
