Seit 1977 reisen die Filmemacher Ernst Arendt und Hans Schweiger für ihre Sendereihe „Tiere vor der Kamera“ um die Welt. Ihre Australienreise beginnen Arendt und Schweiger am südwestlichsten Punkt des Kontinents. Mit ihrem Unimog U1550 fahren sie weiter entlang des nur noch selten genutzten Eyre-Highway durch die Nullarbor-Wüste. Die dreiteilige Reportage endet schließlich in der roten Sandwüste um Alice Springs.
