The migrant crisis is pushing EU countries into trying to come up with solutions that are fair for member states and refugees fleeing conflict. But what of the transit countries through which the migrants travel to northern Europe? There is evidence that people smugglers from the western Balkans are involved in the movement of thousands of migrants and are increasingly favouring land routes through Balkan states like Macedonia.
