Luke Edwards heads out on a late-night grocery store run to get some items for his heavily pregnant wife Peggy. In the check-out line, "Mr. Angel" introduces himself and informs a shocked Luke that he has earned a "reward" – though not a "final reward" – for his selfless deeds, and Luke eventually admits that he always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, though assumes that, at 26, he is now too old to realistically pursue his dream. Mr. Angel promises to "get the ball rolling," however, and Luke then receives a call from an old college friend, Andy Reed, who begs him to fill in for an absent catcher in his team's upcoming game, at which a professional scout will be in attendance.
