After the resignation, the captain of the border troops Sergey Bronnikov returns to his native Siberian city to his father, a retired geologist. He spoke about the find to his former student, and now the official of the city administration, Vadim Mezentsev. Mezentsev, long associated with crime and having an illegal gold mine, decides to use the information personally for himself. Realizing this, Bronnikov Sr. refuses to tell where the gold mine is. Unable to withstand the torture, he dies of a heart attack. Now Mezentsev’s only hope of finding gold is that his father managed to tell his son about it. Suspecting something was wrong, Sergey writes a letter to his old friend Stanislav Sheremet, FSB lieutenant colonel.
The letter should be taken to Moscow by Dasha, a recent acquaintance of Sergei, who is traveling to the capital on the affairs of Sister Arina. Worried about the fate of a friend, Sheremet flies to Kamnegorsk, where he is informed that Sergey is in prison. Investigators are hinting to Sheremet that it would be better for him not to meddle in this matter, but Sheremet is determined. Bronnikov drags a friend to the hospital, where he forces the doctor to perform an operation on him. But even after the operation, Khairullo’s life is in danger.
