Visions of Canada (Part 1)

The sights of Canada, from historic French and British settlements in the east, to the Rockies and the Pacific coast in the west. Canada is one of the world’s largest countries, spanning six time zones. We start in the east, in the provinces of Labrador, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, where the Vikings and then European explorers like John Cabot first made landfall. The British and the French established the early European settlements, as evidenced by the names of modern towns. Decades of conflict finally ended in the sharing of political power and the foundation of a modern society. French influence is still very much in evidence in Quebec City, and in Montreal, which leapt onto the world stage when it hosted World Expo ’67 and then the Olympics in 1976. Canada’s waterways have helped generate much of its wealth, and we fly over the St Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes and their many islands, and of course the spectacular Niagara Falls. After visits to the cities of Ottawa and Toronto, the flight continues west over Ontario and onward across the vast plains of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Calgary, in Alberta, mixes a Wild West frontier spirit with a modern, culturally rich metropolis. Thanks to Alberta’s big oilfields, it is also a major commercial centre for the petroleum industry. Further west lie the Rockies and incredible turquoise lakes such as Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Crossing the wilds of British Columbia, we eventually reach the Pacific coast and the city of Vancouver, and British Columbia’s sedate capital city Victoria, on Vancouver Island.
