Eine bekannte Kollegin stiehlt ihm die Show, und sein Auftritt floppt. Fortan legt er sich mit neuem Outfit noch mehr ins Zeug, um endlich den lange erwarteten Erfolg einzuheimsen. Als der sich jedoch einfach nicht einstellen will, stürzt Joey in eine tiefe Lebenskrise...
Joey gets a chance to perform in front of an HBO comedy scout at a comedy club, but when Phyllis Diller jinxes Joey's chance by taking over Joey's spot in the lineup and performing for an hour, Joey feels like a failure, so he decides to leave the comedy business and become a dull businessman. The feeling of failure spreads to D.J., who has been taking guitar lessons from Jesse. A talk with Joey proves to D.J. that she and Joey both were frustrated and looking for the easiest way out of that frustration.
Joey ne trouve pas de rôle au théâtre et, découragé, décide de devenir businessman. D.J. quant à elle veut arrêter ses cours de guitares.
Joey tiene la oportunidad de actuar ante un ojeador de la cadena HBO, en un club de la comedia, pero cuando Phyllis Diller frustra la oportunidad de Joey, quitándole del cartel y actuando durane una hora, Joey se siente un fracaso y decide dejar el negocio de la comedia y convertirse en un aburrido hombre de negocios. El sentimiento de fracaso se extiende hasta D.J. que ha estado tomando lecciones de guitarra de Jesse.
