Dutzende von schwer beladenen Frachtschiffen passieren täglich den Panama-Kanal. In nur wenigen Stunden gelangt man auf dem künstlichen Schifffahrtsweg vom Atlantik zum Pazifik. Seit der Eröffnung 1914 ist damit eine Umrundung des Kap Hoorns an der stürmischen Südspitze von Feuerland hinfällig. Damals galt der Kanal als achtes Weltwunder. Doch die heutigen Mega-Frachter haben die doppelte oder dreifache Größe der damaligen Schiffe. Ein gigantisches Ausweitungsprojekt soll den Kanal den Anforderungen des modernen Schiffverkehrs anpassen.
