Humans collecting animals didn’t begin for education or conservation; it began as a spectacle of power. For centuries, kings and elites collected exotic animals like trophies, cramming lions, elephants, and monkeys into cramped menageries to show off their wealth and dominance over nature. It was chaotic, cruel, and wildly popular. But as cities like London and Paris grew, so did public discomfort. Shocking events and growing scientific curiosity began to challenge the idea of animals as mere entertainment. Out of that tension, something new emerged: the modern zoo.
